Illinois man killed by cyanide poisoning after striking it rich in lottery

The next month, he was dead.

The Cook County medical examiner's office initially ruled Khan's manner of death natural. But after being prompted by a relative, the office revisited the case and eventually determined there was a lethal amount of cyanide in Khan's system.

"That ... led us to issue an amended death certificate that (established) cyanide toxicity as the cause of death, and the manner of death as homicide," Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Steve Cina said Monday.

I highly recommend you read the whole article on this one- I didn't even bother trying to prune out the most interesting bits. Aside from the obvious sad tale of a hard-working American striking it rich and dying shortly thereafter, the article raises numerous questions including just how apparently easy it is to murder someone and get away with it.

In these days where we're innundated with CSI-style forensic media, it kind of makes you wonder...

Made me wonder, anyway. I feel really sorry for this guy. There have been a number of people murdered after winning the jackpot including Abraham Shakespeare, who came to mind as soon as I read this story.

It would be easy to speculate on what happened, but with such little information, what's the point?

so it would have had to have been in his dinner or a snack afterward. That should narrow down the list of suspects.

It's a dirty, crying shame.
