"It's Sponge Bob making all these kids Gay!"

(I'm standing in a short line at Target on the way home. Guy older than me in the next aisle is bitching about some toy the woman in front of him is buying for somebody. She says nothing, red as a beet, about to break into tears)

You mean just like the TeleTubbies and Tinky Winky from 25 years ago that made the current generation all gayed up? (me)

Yeah YEAH, only Sponge Bob is worse, more kids are watching!

You're a fucking Neanderthal. Gay isn't caused by anything, Gay isn't a choice, GAY JUST IS and you never know who around you just may be Gay!! Quit watching Fox News and get educated! (me)

Put his shit on the belt and left. Not a second glance at me, turned on his boot and headed for the door.

Neanderthal bullies. Just have to stand up to them. And yes I walked out and looked for him. Gone like the punk he was.

Sponge Bob. Sure........

Woman and the cashiers thanked me. She had been mortified by this asshole. Seems like the clown comes in often spouting political bullshit for everyone to hear. I hope next time he keeps his mouth shut. I hope next time I'm there too.

We changed the TV rules around here this year - no real life people on TV shows because those teener things are pure dribble, not harmful just bad TV.

Lots of nature shows. Sponge Bob is great - always hopeful always happy and it puts the boss/employee relationship in front of kids at the most rudimentary level.

But dagnabit I love Sponge Bob! Been watching him since my kids were like 6 and 8. They are 21 and 23 now. Got hook when I forget why but I was in DC and my kids were there we were in a hotel. Sponge Bob came on so I watched it and have been hook since. It was the one where the squirrel was home sick and the gang was trying really dumb things to make her feel at home. The best line is when Patrick says to Sponge Bob, "Guess what I am now?" And Sponge replies, "Stupid?" Patrick, "No, I'm Texas."

Sorry no slam on Texas but it was funny.

I'd probably have similar words if I ran into the same situation. I stopped letting the stupid crazy comments go un challenged. So bravo!

you'll spend most of your life crying every day.

The hormone comment is real. If you were a middle aged woman, you would know that. Hormones cause your emotions to go haywire when you're pregnant, when you're premenopausal, when you're menopausal....and when you're male (but the hormone testosterone causes the more masculine reaction of anger and violence).

I guess it's rude to doubt a poster's anecdote but acceptable to accuse a poster of being a troll.

I doubt your story because I know a bar brag when I hear one. The damsel in distress. The annoyed onlookers. The meat-headed bully too dumb to know you're mocking him. The grandiose speech. The bully then tucking tail and running away. The adoring throng thanking you for standing up to him. You actually think my problem with this story is that I think liberals are all wimps? Only someone who think liberals are perceived as wimps in the first place would find it necessary to concoct a story like this. And on the slim chance it's true, I'm still not impressed because only someone with a liberal=wimp complex would feel the need to respond as you did (following him outside? what the hell?) and then come post it here. "Tinky Winky is gay" type comments are only noteworthy when they're made by someone prominent.

But it's the damsel in distress part that annoys me the most. I myself would probably get embarrassed if some jerk behind me was making comments on my purchases. And I would probably ignore him, not out of fear, but because I wouldn't see any point in getting into it with him. I wouldn't be grateful if some other guy made an even bigger production out of the whole thing and expected me to swoon over his manliness. As I said upthread, a think a better response if you wanted to say something would be to quietly tell the guy to just worry about his own purchases. Maybe others think there is no real harm in a story like this, true or not, but I disagree. It's setting up women as victims who always need and want to be rescued. And don't tell me that's not the point of the story because you made it very much a point, as much as the bully's idiocy was a point.

58. I count at least 5 responses that insinuate you're lying in your OP
Thu Jan 10, 2013, 08:29 PM
Jan 2013

I don't have any reason to doubt your story, but for some reason, there are at least 5 respondents to your OP who don't believe you're telling the truth. Let me state this plainly: unless there's someone in this thread who personally knows you and has knowledge of your doings, NO ONE in this thread knows whether you're telling the truth or not. That holds true for every thread on DU that recounts a personal story without links to back it up. So, what do these 5 people know about you that the rest of us don't know? Answer: nothing--they're just dickheads.

Progressiveinaction (112 posts), in post #14 says: "I totally believe this happened". Let's not mince words. This new person is calling you a liar. I actually just self-deleted my reply to this person, not because he didn't deserve every bit of invective I threw at him, but because I don't want to be locked out of this part of the thread, what I'm typing now. so Progressiveinaction, take a bow. You're new here, but feel comfortable enough already to call long-time posters liars. I won't be the only one watching you.

Larrymoecurlyshemp (58 posts), in post 42, a reply to progressiveinaction, above, says, "Me too". Congratulations, stoogeboy, for calling one of our long-term members a liar on your 8th day here. Marked.

Zappaman (lots of posts) in post #27 says: "Cool story Bro!". Of course, he also said that in response to a different person with the exact same text. It could be that he's got a tragic condition that limits him to 10th grade phraseology. Or he could be calling you (and another person) a liar. Or he could be trying to convince you that your story is so dull that he's just bored stiff. In any case, zappaman may be snarking you, or this may be all he's capable of. Please don't ever confuse this person with the real and worthwhile Frank Zappa.

To round out our field, both Honeycombe8 and someone named Nine suspect your story is not true. You've already spoken to them about this; enough said.

Do any of you 5 have enough fortitude to step right up and explain why you think DB here is a liar? Do you have information we don't have? Do you have what GW Bush called his "gut" feeling? Are you just guessing, and you also happen to think character assassination is ok? There needs to be a high bar set before people start calling long-time DU'ers liars. There needs to be cause. And there should be consequences for this type of rude and antisocial behavior. Rule of thumb: if it will get you punched in the mouth for saying it in person, you probably shouldn't be saying it on the Internet either, brave heroes.

It's Bert and Ernie, the purple Teletubby, all the Wiggles, and probably Bugs Bunny too(he did like to put on a dress every once in a while don't you know). I totally believe a RWer would act this way because I have seen it in real life(thank Dog they don't vote). I have no doubt DB would say what he said he said, because I am outspoken like this on occasion myself. It is seriously F'd up to call someone a liar without proof or something that is way off.

In any case it seems the RWer thinks that no one was ever gay before tv was invented. The same way a lot of people think there was no violence before movies and television. It makes no sense what so ever.
