4.4 million children would get health care if states expand Medicaid; governors appear to play anti-Obama politics
More than 4.4 million children would gain health care coverage if all states opted to expand Medicaid under President Barack Obamas health care law, according to a new study by a bipartisan group of national health care leaders and experts.
The analysis by the Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured shows that by implementing the Medicaid expansion with other provisions of the [Affordable Care Act], states could significantly reduce the number of uninsured. Overall state costs of implementing the Medicaid expansion would be modest compared to increases in federal funds, and many states are likely to see small net budget gains.
Covering more children under Medicaid is of special interest to educators because, as research has established and educators and parents know firsthand, a childs health and ability to participate fully in school depend on access to quality health care.
Medicaid provides health care coverage to 32 million children nationwide; approximately 15 percent of the children have special health care needs. The single largest health insurer for low-income children, Medicaid is also the primary source of health care for the elderly, persons with disabilities and low-income parents.
