if you aim before shooting, you could probably hit the first round accurately.

(10,597 posts)...much we've been dumbed down just in the last 30-40 years. I think it's time we started smarting up! I dream of an America where young people are required to graduate from college, no ifs, ands or buts. Government pays, if they keep their grades up. If their grades go down below 'C' GPA, their parents have to cough up the cost. Thanks kpete for the cartoon.

(10,893 posts)Of course, there's a fat chance of that happening anytime soon, because...you know...government-funded college is considered "socialism". Americans can't have free education or free health care, even though those are some of life's necessities.

(10,597 posts)...I'll keep hollering for it to happen as long as I live. And you stand up for it as long as you live too, you hear? This run-away-vulture-dog-eat-dog capitalism looks like a big fat failure, if you ask me. Maybe it's time we DID try something else? I've been sitting here tonight watching Michael Moore's Capitalism, A Love Story on Current TV. Have you ever noticed how they never define socialism? It's the same thing they did starting about a century ago with the word "Communism", or more recently with the word "Liberal". They throw words out and make everyone afraid of them. A large portion of the society/electorate don't know what those words mean, so they believe if they hear the God-fearing-Christian Republicans say it's bad, then it must be bad. If you hear someone denigrate "socialsim"...ask them what it means. Watch their eyes glaze over and cross. Socialism is NOT Communism. Socialism is a counrty by, for and of We the People! We must reform Capitalism, if we are to keep it at all. After all, the word capitalism isn't in the Constitution! Keep your grades up, and good luck!

(45,851 posts)By the time I was of age to graduate from college both my parents were dead and my younger brother had not yet graduated from HS.
I read so many "solutions" on DU that simply don't account at all for any life that's even slightly out of the ordinary.

(17,621 posts)Our whole society is really dumbed down these days. That is what happens when any society destroys its public school system.

(13,485 posts)Unfortunately, I don't think it's a matter of a short term change. The damage that's been done in the last couple of generations will probably take twice as long just to get back to a point of progress. The loss of a generation of minds is easier to wreck than it is to build.
