Colin Powell: GOP Holds 'Dark Vein Of Intolerance'
................
In an appearance on NBC's "Meet The Press," Powell noted that there is a "dark vein of intolerance in some parts of the party."
"What do I mean by that?," he explained. "What I mean by that is they still sort of look down on minorities."
Powell specifically pointed to October 2012 comments by former Alaska Gov. and Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin on the attacks in Benghazi, Libya.
"When I see a former governor say that the president is 'shuckin' and jivin' -- that's a racial-era slave term," Powell said, referring to Palin's words on Obama's response.

(37,648 posts)"shuckin & jivin'" is indeed a racist term, altho my racist relatives would probably deny it.
"Lazy," which was what Sununu called Obama...that's a racist term. Have you ever heard anyone call any other President "lazy"? It's a racial stereotype....lazy and shiftless. There are other words that mean lazy that are used to describe slow-acting or methodical Presidents.

(52,163 posts)The simple fact is that Reagan was called lazy by people, for good reason, but it was a huge, major rap again him.
Here is another example.

I am curious, just what response should one have to a question "have you ever heard anyone call any other President lazy" if it isn't to point out that yes another President was called lazy.
LisaLynne
(14,554 posts)it really doesn't matter if it has been used to describe someone else. It takes on a different connotation when used to describe an African-American president or any African-American, for that matter.

(52,163 posts)Reagan was by any reasonable definition of the word, lazy. If he were black, it still would be just fine in my book to call him lazy. Now the notion that Obama is lazy is absurd. Now he was unprepared for that debate or at least badly prepared for that debate but that was because he was too busy doing the job to worry about keeping the job.
LisaLynne
(14,554 posts)Because, IMHO, they are specifically alluding to the racist connotations that word can have.
And I would say Bush II was lazy, too. Reagan was pretty busy trying to screw us all.
