Effective February 1, 2013. Apparently, if you are on Medicaid, Fuck dying with dignity, with care and in no pain. (My interpretation of the article). By the way, I got the same letter in my mailbox today. He has also cut physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, no dental for pregnant woman or special services for HIV patients.
Oh yea, he just bought up a new charity hospital in the state and is privatizing it (in Lake Charles).
Is there ANY National Journalists out there interested in whats happening in deep red Louisiana? Rachel, Ed, Lawrence, Melissa, anybody????
Additional Information from the article
"Louisiana will become one of only two states to eliminate Medicaid hospice. Arizona was in that mix, but has already reinstituted it because it costs more. "You're going to pick them up and bring them to the emergency room, to the hospital, which costs considerably more than the $140/day paid for by the state for the Medicaid program," said Phelps." [Sherrill Phelps with the Louisiana-Mississippi Hospice Association].
There will be a candlelight vigil at the State Capitol steps Wednesday from 4:00 to 6:30 P.M. to protest the elimination of Medicaid hospice.

UPDATE:
Gov. Bobby Jindal backs down on Medicaid hospice elimination
But on Wednesday, the administration reversed course. The program will be maintained for the rest of the state's fiscal year, which ends June 30, with the use of "temporary bridge funding," according to a news release from the Department of Health and Hospitals. The release referred to that money as grant funding but did not specify where it came from or how reallocating it to hospice care would affect other state programs.
In the longer-term, the release said the department would work to revamp its hospice program with a greater focus on in-home and community-based care. That could include a greater reliance on non-profit and faith-based organizations and changes to the rates paid to hospice providers, according to the release.

(5,857 posts)his newest tax proposal will help the state grow....
His proposal is to eliminate the inheritance tax and income tax, and replace it with additional sales tax. This would make the sales tax 12-13.5% in most of the state (including 13% in greater New Orleans).

http://www.thetowntalk.com/article/20130123/OPINION/130121017/Your-Mail-Jindal-s-tax-plan-harmful-scheme
From the article:
Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal wants to eliminate state income taxes on individuals and corporations and replace that revenue by raising the state sales tax to the highest in the nation.
This will leave Louisianas least affluent paying a higher portion of their income in taxes while the highest earners pay a lower portion. In other words, the governor wants to increase taxes on the poorest to fund tax cuts for the richest.
Jindals tax increase will hit hardest those who can least afford it: working families, students working their way through school, seniors and anyone living on a fixed income. Make no mistake, this tax hike will also hit middle-class families.
This scheme will make Louisiana a graveyard for retirees. They pay little or no income taxes. The governors plan is just a tax increase for Louisiana retirees, most of whom can least afford it. Our state retirees pay no income taxes on their state pension payments. This plan is nothing but a tax increase for them.
The governors numbers dont hold up to scrutiny. In the last fiscal year, the state brought in about $2.9 billion from income taxes on corporations and individuals. The sales tax revenues the same year were about the same $2.9 billion. To keep this swap revenue neutral the governor will have double the state sales tax from 4 cents to 8 cents.

(3,596 posts)This will benefit the wealthy that earn more but don't necessarily spend all of their income. They will only be taxed on the portion they consume - say 85 or 90% of $250K whereas a worker at McDonald's who spends all their income will pay tax on 100% of their $25K income. This is the war on the poor and the middle class in its most base expression.

(6,045 posts)If in home hospice care is cheaper than the state paying for transporting & housing sick & dying patients then would it not suggest Jindal is doing this out of spite or revenge? How mean can someone be? All the crying they did over "Death Panels" & then go & do this is DISGUSTING!!
Let me know if I am wrong about it being cheaper for in home hospice vs the other...I dont want to be one of those people who spread incorrect info even if the incorrect info helps support my point.

Louisiana's Jindal to Abused Women and the Dying: Drop Dead:
Jindal is also cutting funding for women's shelters because "the Jindal administration said the state was moving away from costly residential care for domestic violence victims in favor of short-term hotel stays and family care." You got that? Victims of domestic violence should stay with family where their abusers would never find them, obviously. The funding cut also hits sexual assault centers, too, because compassion costs too much.

(4,950 posts)it's those of us under 65.
Cancers highest incidence of detection are in 40's-50's . And that is only one type of terminally ill-- there is kidney failure, congestive heart failure, liver failure, as well as some neuro-muscular diseases that send people to an earlier grave than usual.
Theses patients will be in hospitals, not nursing homes because the nursing homes won't take them. There are hospice nursing home beds but these patients (medicaid) will not qualify for them. How will the nursing home be paid and on what criteria? If the diagnosis is end of life care, that is hospice. Hospice educates family on end of life too. I've seen so much end of life planning fuck ups by regular medical personnel I have little confidence the great state of Louisiana will be able to sustain the length of these admissions and for sure, the suffering of the patient will increase as well as their susceptibility to hospital acquired infections. This will bring scores down in LA hospitals for customer satisfaction which decreases their overall Medicare reimbursement. I think you will see a reversal.
On the estate tax/sales tax-- people will be driven out of the state for that alone. They will shop for cars elsewhere and home purchases will decline.

Two Republican governors shot down Mitt Romneys comments about the gifts President Obama gave key constituencies to ensure their votes.
Those remarks were absolutely wrong. We have got to stop dividing American voters, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said Wednesday at a news conference at while attending the Republican Governors Association Conference in Las Vegas. I absolutely reject that notion, that description. . . . Were fighting for 100 percent of the vote.
Thats not who we are as a party, Jindal added. We shouldnt view individuals as members of interest groups.

(30,058 posts)for President anyhow. He was born in the US but not to parents who was citizens at the time of his birth, neither parent was a citizen.
I tried to tell kin folks in Louisiana they was making a mistake but they did not listen, now I don't have to try very hard to show he is not a good person.

Somebody needs to grab him by the tie and not let go until he learns that hospice is the cheap way out, keeping people at home with drugs and occasional visits to help the family out. It's one hell of a lot cheaper than the alternative, hospitalizing people when the families can no longer cope.
Jindal is an idiot. He should be tarred and feathered for this one.

(944 posts)What a horrid little man Jindal is. His cruel decision is impossible to fathom.
May this dark deed put an end to his aspirations for national office forever.
Hugs to you southern_belle.
Hope to read more about the vigil on the Capitol steps later.

I hope the vigil today begins to shed a bright light on just what this jerk Jindal has in mind for the most vulnerable among us
-- the teminally ill.
Seriously, is this all he's got? Beating up on dying fellow citizens? Pathetic.
As you point out southern_belle a good and bright light of truth could help out here. Surely someone in the media could
speak up on behalf of hospice patients by simply publicizing this tragedy.
Hope that media folks are looking at this one.
The exorbitant and regressive sales tax is beyond belief as well. They just can't keep themselves from trying to punish
those who least deserve it, can they?
