Is that it's customary to have the Military Band and the featured vocalists pre-record the songs.

I can imagine they do this in case there are any last minute hang ups or tech problems, but that sometimes they can choose to use the pre-recordeds.

Scratchy throat, missing oboeist? Use the back up tapes!

A recording she made for the event. Forgivable because of cold weather on a singer's throat/vocal chords. Yo-Yo Ma did the same 4 years ago. His instrument doesn't perform well when cold.
