(60,336 posts)They know this and this is why the rush to push through the gerrymandering of the Presidential election is on. They are losing the battle of preventing people from voting and this is the only way they can preserve their legitimacy.

(17,609 posts)and they seem to think and their ignorant base, that what affects a majority won't affect them too.
Some of the poorest, ignorant people keep shouting "WE GOT TO CUT THE SPENDING" not realizing it will affect them more than most and when it does they blame the Liberals.

(3,596 posts)While I think the extremism on the right is going to make it difficult for the GOP to win broad national elections, it is not impossible.
Keep in mind that personality plays a large role in national elections, especially for President. Policy issues are sometimes overcome by personality, like-ability, etc.
So it is entirely possible that the Republicans could nominate a very personable, outgoing individual that prospective voters "would like to sit down and have a beer with" and the Democrats nominate someone who is perhaps a policy wonk but not as personally likable. That can affect the popular vote. For example, as much as I respect Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, he doesn't register very high on my like ability meter. Senator Marco Rubio, while I disagree with him on policy, seems to be a likable character. Those differences can make a big difference in an election.
