A tale of two crimes and the cabinet
Both Timothy Geithner and Eliot Spitzer committed crimes that we knew about in 2009. Eliot Spitzer spent money on high end prostitutes. There is no evidence that the money he used wasn't his, there is no evidence the prostitute was forced to do anything she didn't want to do, there is no evidence any investigation was compromised by his use of that prostitute. In short, aside from his wife, there is no evidence of any victim of his crime. Timothy Geithner worked for the IMF from 2001 through 2004. In 2005, the IRS audited his 2003 and 2004 returns and found out that he owed several thousand dollars in social security taxes that the IMF doesn't withhold but which they do issue a check to the employee so they can pay the tax. Only after Obama decided he wanted Geithner for Sec of the Treasury, did Geithner pay the taxes he owed for 2001 and 2002. Now, lets be blunt here. Mr. Geithner isn't an idiot. Mr. Geithner was told by his employer, as all employees who work for employers who don't withhold, that he owed those taxes. He endorsed a check, given to him by his employer, the purpose of which was to pay those taxes. And that isn't a victimless crime. Someone's house went without heat because we didn't have the money for the HEAP program that year. So how were these crimes treated. Well, Geithner got to be Secretary of the Treasury, Spitzer wasn't even considered for Attorney General. So pay for sex and you are untouchable, rip off the treasury and you get the keys to it. What message does that send?
