LAKE MARY — Florida Democrats elected Tallahassee fundraiser Allison Tant as party chairman this morning, capping the most contentious leadership race the party has seen in decades.

Tant won on a 587-to-448 vote over Hillsborough County Committeeman Alan Clendenin.

Tant, 51, has raised money for President Barack Obama and other Democrats. She was elected chairwoman of the Leon County Democratic Party in December, but does not have a long history with grass-roots activists around the state. She was backed by Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson and most of the state’s Democratic congressional delegation.

...

Palm Beach County, which controlled 82 votes in the race, supplied considerable drama. State Committeeman John Ramos joined other South Florida committeemen and committeewomen in pledging support for Clendenin this month. But a few days later, Ramos announced he was backing Tant. He wavered over the last two weeks, but today said he cast his 41 votes for Tant.

It's Tant. Allison Tant wins FL Dem Chair race, beats Clendenin 587-448

Allison Tant beat Alan Clendin in a hard-fought race for Florida Democratic Party chair.

Tant won 587 votes to Clendenin's 448.

"Thank you, Alan Clendenin, for making me a better candidate," Tant said.

Tant's win spared Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz and U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson a measure of embarrassment. Both pushed hard for Tant. They wanted her to lead the party because she knows how to fundraise. And they need money, truckloads of it, to unseat Gov. Rick Scott in 2014.

The workers, donators, all that has been built, were with Alan Clendedin. But Nelson strong arms a few of the old ladies all of the time. When the last chair was caught lobbying for the republicans, friends of Jeb Bush, we wanted that chair removed. Nelson intervened for a few votes, all that it took. We paid that chair 100K and she just had to take 3800 a month from the other side while working for us.

This is more of the same!

Right out in the open. The 1% will always take care of themselves first. The rest of us are just useless voters.
