"Most admired woman by Americans"; the polling was done in the US, people outside the US were not polled. America is not the world. The fact that the list includes people who aren't American, like Aung San Suu Kyi and Queen Elizabeth II, still doesn't make it "most admired woman in the world", just "women most admired by Americans"

I live in the UK, I can tell you that she's not really a topic of conversation; "most admired woman", if you polled here? She wouldn't be in the top ten. Aung San Suu Kyi would be, probably. The Queen, maybe. I'm neither a fan or not-a-fan; what I'm not a fan of is the frankly ugly and stupid idea a lot of Americans have that "America = the world". (Helpful hint: this is one of the many reasons people in other countries don't like Americans.)

you make a good point. This is part of what makes us the Ugly American stereotype. We are hopelessly provincial.

Even though we now have a President who isn't a raving jackass, I would still sew maple leaves on my luggage before venturing into Europe. And yes, I do know a number of things about Canada, living a mere 100 miles south. Unfortunately, that includes the fact that their government is pretty conservative right now, but they don't stomp around the world like a 10,000 pound gorilla as the US does.

Whereas in fact its perfectly clear he/she is simply pointing out the obvious. *America is not the world* and its idiotic to respond by asking for polls to the contrary.

As an South African I can tell you its freaking obvious Hillary is not the most admired woman in the entire world. You're confusing "who America admires in the world" with "who the world admires". Barak Obama is hugely admired here, but hardly anyone who isn't a politics geek has heard of Hillary Clinton.

The fact is the majority of people's foreign political awareness in developing countries (which constitute most of the Earth's population) doesn't go further than premiers, and then only of the big countries. As a member of the executive Hillary probably has more visibility than most simply because its the USA, but its still only a large minority outside of the states who recognise her by name.

I work with a bunch of educated programmers with little interest in global politics and they didn't know who I was talking about when I mentioned Hillary with reference to current affairs in America. It took a little prodding before they went "oh, the ex-President's wife"

I'm not telling you this because I don't like Hillary. I'm saying it because you seem to be afflicted with the distinctly American affliction of confusing what's important to Americans with what's important to the rest of the world, which Spider is trying to help you see. In fact in a poll published in the local Mail and Guardian the Nobel Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai was identified as the most admired woman (by Africans) in the world.

Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama Most Admired in 2012
Clinton has been Most Admired more than any other woman in Gallup's history
by Frank Newport
PRINCETON, NJ -- Americans again this year name Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama as the Most Admired Woman and Most Admired Man living in any part of the world. Clinton has been the Most Admired Woman each of the last 11 years, and Obama has been the Most Admired Man five years in a row. First lady Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, and Condoleezza Rice are next in line behind Clinton on the Most Admired Woman list, while Nelson Mandela, Mitt Romney, Billy Graham, George W. Bush, and Pope Benedict XVI follow Obama as Most Admired Man.

She *is* the "Most Admired Woman" according to this poll.

Twice to Mother Teresa in the 90s and once to Laura Bush after 9/11/01. Gallup's most admired list was created in 1946, women were added to the list in 1948. Hillary has been on the list more times than any other person of either gender (Eleanor Roosevelt was included 13 times and Eisenhower 12). That's a pretty good record.
