(58,724 posts)More debate, less filling? For those counting, the orgy of primary debates is rapidly approaching record territory for a single party. During the 2007-08 cycle, Republicans held 19 debates, and Democrats limited themselves to a mere 16.
Before that? Relative silence. In 2004, Democrats staged just two primary debates, none before the first vote in Iowa. During the 1999-2000 campaign, Republicans engaged in just three primary debates.

(59,504 posts)I watched the debates and assume many others did too. I suspect that it might be a typo and they should have said 2000.
The fact is that there were 16 debates in 2004 and many were before Iowa. I remember them. I remember in one pre Iowa debate, Edwards twisting a Dean comment that we had to compete everywhere including winning some people with Confederate flags on their license plates. I remember the last debate before Iowa, where Dean reacting to the normal piling on the front runner, declared that he did not want to be a pin cushion. I remember Sharpton's humor - and the fact that he went after Dean for not having a single black in any of his VT administrations (ignoring that VT is about 1% black). I remember Kerry's excellent answers on many questions and his good humor - even when attacked. I remember Kerry "defending" Edwards when a moderator questioned why he did not serve by saying that he was in diapers in the Vietnam era. (Then apologizing a day later when Edwards was offended because he was a child, not a baby.) I remember a few Clark gaffes in the debates that he was in.

(12,157 posts)The more debates they have, the more they can talk up privatizing everything, sucking the life out of every government function except the military, putting foxes in charge of every henhouse, turning back the clock on every good thing the Democrats have done, removing any and all environmental protections, throwing everybody but privileged white males under the bus, etc. etc.
Then these destructive talking points and lunatic ideas get discussed with gravitas on "news" programs and written about on editorial pages and web sites, and they gradually become part of the landscape of what is possible.
The idea is to make their sick "ideology" seem normal to Americans, so that even as the most extreme candidates slough off one by one like so much worm flesh, their toxic ideas burrow further into the national cranium.
So, for example, maybe abolishing the Department of Education doesn't happen, but diverting more public funds to private institutions does.
