This Red Tibetan Mastiff breed named Big Splash is now considered to be the most expensive pet dog in the world. The 11-month-old dog was purchased by a coal baron from the north of China for a whopping $1.5 million. Big Splash or Hong Dong in Chinese is a perfect specimen according to its breeder, Lu Liang.
Along with jewelry and cars, Red Tibetan mastiff has become a status symbol in China as a way for the rich to show off their wealth. This dog breed is an ancient descendant of animals kept by nomadic Chinese tribes. They can weigh up to 182 pounds. The heaviest was 286 pounds.
===================
I have three big dogs, one came from a friend and was free as a puppy, one is deaf and nobody wanted her so I got her from my local shelter for free, and one came from a rescue where I had to pay $25 for the vaccinations they'd given him. A million and a half dollars could sure save a lot of dogs...

(12,081 posts)For animals that treat us so well, we do an awful lot wrong to them. We do freaky breeding to make them look like we want them to look. We use them as status symbols. We go buy a puppy that we think is just so cute from a breeder while millions of animals sit cramped, lonely, and hungry in a shelter or on the streets. We don't deserve the love they give us.

(4,243 posts)You hit it out of the park. Shame on those people who pay hundreds, and in this case 1.5 mil. for a dog when there are plenty of furry babies in shelters who need homes!

He'd look cute with a lion trim and the words FREE TIBET groomed onto his side.
