In his speech to the National Federation of Republican Women, Gingrich advocated making English the official language, a position he still holds, and added: "We should replace bilingual education with immersion in English so people learn the common language of the country and they learn the language of prosperity, not the language of living in a ghetto."
In the CNN debate and subsequent analysis the bobble-heads treated this as some sort of controversy or open question... Was Romney right to say that Newt called Spanish the language of living in a ghetto?
Anderson Cooper and Wolf Blitzer were sort of agnostic about the thing because he did not specify Spanish. And Nobody just read the freaking quote to the viewing audience.
WTF? The Romney ad isn't 100% fair but it is 99% fair, which is a lot for a political ad (!)
Of course Newt was talking about Spanish but he was not talking only about Spanish.
His logically parsed statement is: All non-English languages that factor in bilingual education in the USA are languages of living in a ghetto.
Spanish is numerically overwhelmingly the non-English language of actual biligual education in the United States of America. The fact that Newt's comments also apply to Vietnamese doesn't mean he wasn't including Spanish.
"You called my wife a whore."
"No, I said that all women like your wife are whores. It wasn't limited to your whore wife."
"Oh, that's different. I apologize."
