Not watching Obama sing it, only hearing his voice, ! He's got a BEAUTIFUL voice! Close your eyes when you listen, you'll be even more amazed!

Al Green was (and possibly still is!) one of Mr. Frazzled's favorite singers. But this is the album (from 1972) that I remember always sitting out next to the turntable. I think we wore it out.

Otis was THE man. I lived in Paris for a year, in 1968, and this song was on every jukebox in every cafe (along with Ike and Tina), and I will always associate it with my carefree youth!

Try a little Tenderness was a bad bad song. Truth is I had my first serious relationship around that time and we used to sit by the waterfront - Otis and Paris - freaking perfect. My first Paris trip was in 72.

DH wanted this played at our wedding, problem was as I later found out, he didn't know how to do it singularly rather than plurally...so I divorced his cheating butt..

Rev Al playing AL Green and Obama now and James Brown too and MJ - all from the Apollo - very cool.
Every time I Obama sing that line I laugh - it is so cool.

In the summer of 1966, while a DJ convention was being held in Memphis, Tennessee, the song was written in about thirty minutes. Penn and Moman were cheating while playing cards with Florida DJ Don Schroeder.[1] They wrote the song while on a break. “We were always wanting to come up with the best cheatin’ song. Ever,” Penn said.[2] The duo went to the hotel room of Quinton Claunch, another Muscle Shoals alumnus, and founder of Hi Records, to write. Claunch told them, "boys, you can use my room on one condition, which is that you give me that song for James Carr. They said I had a deal, and they kept their word.”[3]

The song has been covered by many artists, including Oscar Toney, Jr., Percy Sledge, Joe Tex, Bruce Springsteen, Deacon Blue, Dolly Parton with Porter Wagoner, Elvis Costello, Ry Cooder, Ryan Adams with Courtney Love, Aretha Franklin from This Girl's in Love with You (1970), Prince Buster, Lee Hazlewood and Ann-Margret, Clarence Carter, The Allman Brothers, Roy Hamilton, Richard Thompson and Linda Thompson, Moving Hearts, Eva Cassidy, Diamanda Galás, Flying Burrito Brothers, Linda Ronstadt, The Afghan Whigs, Alex Chilton with Teenage Fanclub, Widespread Panic, Rock City Angels, Eels, Cat Power, Adam Duritz, The New Standards, June Tabor with Oysterband, Gram Parsons, Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog, Frank Black, Peter Green and Ian Moore
