Palm oil firms said to be offering $130 for each orangutan killed in Borneo.Mom & daughter orangutan

saved at the last minute. by Brit-based animal rescue group. Ever since the danger of transfat became an issue, palm oil plantation companies have been wiping out orangutans. Even though palm oil isn't a transfat, it is not a healthy alternative. Companies use it because its a cheap alternative.

'Our arrival could not have been more timely,' said Dr Signe Preuschoft, a Four Paws primate expert.

'A few minutes later and the orang-utans could have been dead.

'We discovered a gang of young men surrounding them and both victims were clearly petrified.

'The gang meanwhile were jubilant in anticipation of their rewards for catching and killing the animals. These massacres must not be allowed to continue.'

Jane Goodall wrote a book "Hope for Animals and their World: How Endangered Species are being rescued from the Brink" which included stories about all the things people were doing to help save animals close to extinction - it was quite a hopeful book. Now, we have people hell bent on making a profit neutralizing those efforts.

We went to see that baby, but it wasn't out for the day yet. He said that over half the population of Orang-utans had been wiped out in the last decade. Terrible stuff.

I remember back in 2000 looking at Borneo (after working on Rainforest Issues) and from satellite, the bottom part of the country was turned into Mango farms, in like 7 years. Really depressing. Sounds like the Owl issues in the Pacific NorthWest. Kill em off, and get the territory.
