Confederate battle flag raised over Mississippi Supreme Court building
A Confederate battle flag flew atop a state building in Mississippi for a couple hours after workers mistakenly bought it, a state spokeswoman told the Clarion-Ledger newspaper.
The flag was put up on the state Supreme Court building in Jackson about 2 p.m. Friday and taken down by 4 p.m.
Kym Wiggins, public information officer for the state Department of Finance and Administration, gave this account, the Clarion-Ledger said:
Workers went to a local vendor to buy new flags to replace a state flag that was torn. They were given two boxes labeled "Mississippi State Flag" -- but the flags inside were Confederate battle flags. A maintenance worker then put up the flag, and the mistake wasn't noticed for a couple of hours.
Wiggins described the incident as "highly unusual."
A professor emeritus of political science at the University of Southern Mississippi gave the Clarion-Ledger a different take. "Have we seceded already?" said Joseph Parker. The execution is faster than I thought.

(51,103 posts)They probably don't have enough state workers that can take time to make a trip for a purchase.

(52,166 posts)some state flags look something like confederate flags. I did see that MS doesn't but had to look it up myself.

(2,101 posts)I don't know how to put the picture here, so a verbal comparison will have to do.
"Three stripes consisting of red, white, red. The canton is azure containing a ring of stars encompassing the state seal in gold." Wikipedia
The stripes run horizontally with the blue canton (square) the height of the upper two stripes.
It would be my bet that the workers have selective vision, no doubt they are marksmen on the gun range, and would only need one bullet to successfully stand their ground. I lose many bets though...

(17,608 posts)the description of the canton doesn't match the actual picture on the wikipedia article for Mississippi.

Ok I found one that matches your description - it was proposed in 2001, according to wikipedia (look at lower image on right):

(10,201 posts)Lets say for the sake of arguments that the maintenance workers have no clue what the state flag looks like. Now suppose perhaps that the maintenance worker is a first-generation American who may not have a grasp on the history of the nation.
The reason I'm thinking this: is that I have personally witnessed a similar mistake made by a co-worker. He had mistakenly identified the Alabama state flag as the confederate battle flag even though the colors were all off.

I can see how it was an honest mistake as well--although it's sometimes hard to believe in honest mistakes anymore.
