Oh-oh. Pope Benedict according to 12th century seer St. Malachy will be succeeded by the last pope.

From Wikipedia

The Prophecy of the Popes, attributed to Saint Malachy, is a list of 112 short phrases in Latin. They purport to describe each of the Roman Catholic popes (along with a few anti-popes), beginning with Pope Celestine II (elected in 1143) and concluding with current pope Benedict XVI's successor, a pope described in the prophecy as "Peter the Roman", whose pontificate will end in the destruction of the city of Rome

http://www.marianland.com/thirdsec.html

"I write in obedience to you, my God, who command me to do so through his Excellency the Bishop of Leiria and through your Most Holy Mother and mine.

"After the two parts which I have already explained, at the left of Our Lady and a little above, we saw an Angel with a flaming sword in his left hand; flashing, it gave out flames that looked as though they would set the world on fire; but they died out in contact with the splendor that Our Lady radiated towards him from her right hand: pointing to the earth with his right hand, the Angel cried out in a loud voice: 'Penance, Penance, Penance!'. And we saw in an immense light that is God: 'something similar to how people appear in a mirror when they pass in front of it' a Bishop dressed in White 'we had the impression that it was the Holy Father'. Other Bishops, Priests, men and women Religious going up a steep mountain, at the top of which there was a big Cross of rough-hewn trunks as of a cork-tree with the bark; before reaching there the Holy Father passed through a big city half in ruins and half trembling with halting step, afflicted with pain and sorrow, he prayed for the souls of the corpses he met on his way; having reached the top of the mountain, on his knees at the foot of the big Cross he was killed by a group of soldiers who fired bullets and arrows at him, and in the same way there died one after another the other Bishops, Priests, men and women Religious, and various lay people of different ranks and positions. Beneath the two arms of the Cross there were two Angels each with a crystal aspersorium in his hand, in which they gathered up the blood of the Martyrs and with it sprinkled the souls that were making their way to God.""I write in obedience to you, my God, who command me to do so through his Excellency the Bishop of Leiria and through your Most Holy Mother and mine.

The prophecy is confusing but it can be metaphorical. The Pope is not actually physically killed but he probably is resigning in what is beginning to appear as some kind of disgrace and he's taking a large part of the clergy and other Religious with him. The big city in ruins is the Vatican or more correctly what the Vatican stands for. Any body else have any thoughts about this?

Last year there was a leaked assassination report.

The report was written up after an Archbishop Paolo Romeo met with Chinese businessmen and told them the Pope would be dead in a year and that the Pope was having internal problems with Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone. A Wikipedia search of Paolo Romeo suggests he is also planning to resign this month.

http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,2107167,00.html

The Pope actually came out later in an unprecedented show of public solidarity with Cardinal Bertone.

Supposedly Bertone has had a heavy hand in lining up a significant number of Italians for participation in the future Papal Conclave. Archbishop Paolo Romeo suggested that the Pope would prefer having Cardinal Bertone relieved of his position but cannot because Bertone is "too powerful".

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702303684004577506880615485076.html

Cardinal Bertone's full name and birthplace, which should be interesting to some, is Tarcisio Pietro (Peter) Evasio Bertone and he was born in Romano Canavese, Piedmont, Italy.

stumbled on the following about Fatima predicting a papal assasination (the so called Third Secret). Look who issued the offfical interpretation of the Fatima prediction in 2000 - none other than Cardinal Ratzinger.
snip

While the Vatican claims to have disclosed the Third Secret in June 2000, what was actually revealed was Lucia’s account of the vision of the “Bishop dressed in White”, not the explanatory narrative of Our Lady. Instead, the Vatican supplied its own interpretation of the Fatima Vision, which was written by then-Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI. According to his analysis, the Vision was simply a premonition of the attempted assassination of Pope John Paul II in St. Peter’s Square on May 13, 1981 – and nothing more. Since his interpretation neglects the obvious inconsistency that John Paul, unlike the Pope of the Vision, survived the shooting, it has become increasingly discredited among Fatima scholars. Another defect in the “official explanation” is that it doesn’t even attempt to address is the anachronistic arrows that are fired at the Pope in the Fatima Vision.

because of demographic changes in the population and the deaths of those who were part of an older, more sexist and racist era.

If you're part of the old, hate-filled mindset, then this would be upsetting, hair on fire, oh noes the world is ending news. Just look at all the white gun nutters open carrying in this nation in ways that are meant to intimidate. They're one mistake away from starting something really bad (for them) here. No one wants to take away their guns. People just want some limits on gun accessibility for reasonable reasons. The nutters also mostly white males - who, as a group, have had virtually unlimited power for generations in this nation.

Republicans who pay attention to the reality-based world see the writing on the wall for their party, too. Until the sexist and racist contingent is gone, they cannot win elections at the federal level honestly (which is why they are all for gerrymandering and electoral college configuring to make it remotely possible for them to win.) They are going to have to find a new narrative because the one they have is grotesque to the majority in this nation.

I don't place any faith in any of these beliefs, but I can look at demographic data and know the old is passing away and a time of greater diversity and acceptance is here. It takes the pols a while to catch up, but they're already reading the tea leaves.

I also know the Pope's butler stole private correspondence - and who knows what's in those papers? And I know the church continues to bear the burden of this Pope as the clergyman who was directly responsible for shielding pedophiles within the church from any criminal charges by threatening excommunication of anyone who broke the silence on this issue within the church hierarchy that he enforced - and this is probably also what got him the position he holds now - to continue the cover up.

So, I would see it as a joyous moment if the person who personally made sure that pedophiles were free to abuse children brought down the organization he was chosen "by god" to lead.

Seems to me to be about the end of the Catholic Church as we know it. It doesn't mean that the world is going to end or Christianity is going to end but that this institution which seems to have kept the worst facets of the Roman Empire in place will finally go the way of the dodo bird.

though there are some good, decent Catholics(Biden, Kerry, and the Kennedys come to mind) the Catholic Church as a whole is very corrupt, and could use a good revamping. I wouldn't mind seeing the Vatican sold, the money could go a long way towards ending world poverty.

try to live Christ like lives. It's too bad that the politics of the hierarchy are so corrupt and that those pedophile priests make the good ones look bad. I think it's time for a whole revamping. Admit women to the priesthood. Let clergy marry unless they really want to take vows of celibacy by entering a cloister. They have to accept women's rights to make decisions about their own bodies and family planning. They really need to go back to the teachings of Christ.

it's a bunch of hooey.

There's plenty of evidence Malachi never wrote such a thing, and to fit the popes to into the prophecy requires twisting reality to an unrecognizable point, much like with Nostradamus.

The saint it's attributed to has no documented statements about it and it very conveniently manages to name every Pope prior to a certain date yet gives only vague metaphors afterwards, that many people have tried to twist to describe the actual Pope. The Catholic Church also puts no bearing on it since doing so would contradict Catholic theology (as well as the Bible.)
