Bones or Dr. Crusher just held their gadgets in their hands to scan patients - a handheld ultrasound is only different in that the doctor holds it in contact with you, and he can see your organs working in real-time.
For those of you with Android phones, here's an app that you can use to take your pulse and get a mini-cardiogram just by holding your finger over your phone's camera.
