HA! No he didn't. No he didn't just bend down and take a swig from the kiddy Poland Springs bottle. #Imdone

(10,751 posts)...it was weird. Actually I also blame whoever put together the setup for his appearance. Obviously they put water there in case he needed it. Did no one think that they should put it within easy reach, so he did not need to go off camera to retrieve it?
Really, I don't begrudge him a drink of water. But he had already been wiping his mouth and his forehead, he had this weird clicking thing going on as he spoke, and he was looking desperate. The way he lunged for the water was hilarious.
His whole speech was embarrassingly bad.

(62,276 posts)...then takes a dainty sip. It is a fucking SNL skit. It's one of the most awkward things I've ever seen a high level politician do. (Bush massaging German President / PM comes to mind.)

(27,310 posts)Anyway, tomorrow when I am at work and have a decent connection, I'll check it out. I hope it is as awkward and laughable as you and others describe it and contributes to Rubio's demise as being the "Great Brown Hope" of the GOP.

(4,220 posts)This was an opportunity using a prepared speech. As a presidential candidate he would need to be able to think on his feet and speak with authority. That did not happen tonight. I was actually surprised at how nervous he seemed.

(25,523 posts)The water was too far away from him and he's trying not to look silly while he's sneaks in a gulp because he's probably been dying of thirst for about 10 minutes. And he's trying for his gulp not to be distracting, but that makes it more distracting etc.
It reminded my of those cheesy stand up routines...

(15,262 posts)And no, that is not political discourse. It is a time-honored tradition in American politics, RIDICULE!
Ridicule is one of the very best political devices EVER.
It is difficult to pull the lever for someone you laugh AT.
But hey, if you want to make contact with the GOP and negotiate a ridicule truce, I'm right behind you (don't look back).

perhaps Obama used an invisible dehydration drone? I have no proof. it's very suspicious that #rubio would not be adaquately hydrated
Glitterati
(3,182 posts)which was damned awful. It's the grotesque way he tried to make sure he was always facing the camera. Someone obviously coached him about being on camera, yet forgot to tell him how to gracefully take a drink of water if he needed it.
His comments were awful. Just awful.
It was a long, painful attack on Obama while repeating Republican talking points - the Mitt Romney campaign, SOTU style.
While Obama spoke to Congress and the American people, Rubio spoke only to the teabaggers he so desperately needs.
His entire speech was mean. It was boorish. It was ugly. It was the Tea Party writ large. While maintaining your face on the camera at all times, even while choking oneself on a drink of water, and wiping off flop sweat on a horribly dark set.
