General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI am sick, sick, SICK of John McCain!!
I am sick of being held hostage to his grudges.
I am sick of hearing him steamroll anyone who doesn't agree with him.
I am sick of his strident attitude masking his lousy judgment.
I am sick of his mean, petty sense of humor.
I am sick unto DEATH of his willingness to stop us from getting our needs met in the name of his desire to be remembered as something he's not...relevant, important, and a politician who does anything but obstruct.
I've seen just about all I can watch of his smug, entitled face. I HOPE that the Arizona press is right in their positing that he may be nearing retirement because I need to live long enough to see John McCain and his ilk relegated to the dustbin of history!!
Thanks for listening. My last nerve has been singing all day and I needed some relief.

(1,415 posts)I seem to remember when he wasn't a complete Teatard (finance reform, pork chopping, etc.). What happened? Did Palin slip something in his drink that caused irreparable brain damage, or was it just because he was in the same room with her?

had not gone to Homeland Security and had instead finished out her term and then run against McCain, she might have won. On the other hand, it was 2010 - I don't know that any non-freak could have beat McPain that year.

(50,950 posts)him did so with utter respect due to his time in the Hanoi Hilton. But sorry. All that good will has been spent, and he's now just a cranky pain in the ass who has not made a reasonable contribution to any discussion in ages.

(233 posts)From what I've read, the Hanoi Hilton was the best place to be, if you were shot down and otherwise captured by the VC, the place where special cases were put for preferential treatment. McCain got there because his daddy was an admiral, I believe. Furthermore, the author of Flight of the Intruder posits that we shouldn't celebrate pilots for being shot down, because many of those pilots got shot down because of their own incompetence. Plus, who says he was tortured? Can we really accept McCain's testimony in such matters, given the dishonesty he has since displayed over the intervening decades?
He's even flip-flopped on the "enhanced interrogation" issue, hypocrite!

(233 posts)Stephen Coonts may have written fiction, but he seems to be the real deal. From Wikipedia: "He entered the Navy the following year and flew an A-6 Intruder medium attack plane during the Vietnam War, where he served on two combat cruises aboard the USS Enterprise (CVN-65). He accumulated 1600 hours in the A-6 Intruder and earned a number of Navy commendations, including the Distinguished Flying Cross. (His navigator-bombardier was LTjg Stanley W. Bryant who later became a Rear Admiral and deputy commander-in-chief of the US naval forces in Europe.)
After the war Coonts served as a flight instructor for A-6 aircraft for two years, then did a tour as an assistant catapult and arresting gear officer aboard USS Nimitz (CVN-68)."
Pull your head out of the sand. Do the research on McCain. Telling me to self-delete is as bad as telling me "if you don't like this country, move out."
I do have some conjecture in my post, but have you ever heard of occam's razor?

(233 posts)I am not trolling. I understand not everyone checks in to DU as frequently as myself, but I really am interested in reading the details which establish as fact that McCain was tortured. Was he? Please, I'd appreciate it if you could give me a source. If you can take the time to critique my post, can't you take a moment to show me the error of my ways?

(1,415 posts)and "preferential treatment."
Shit on his policies. Shit on his blustering. That's all fair game.
Unless you were there, don't shit on his flying or his torture. Baseless accusations are the fallback of a weak-minded idiot (I.e.: Tea Party) who can't go after somebody based on what they say and do. Given McCain's track record, you show some real lack of imagination and brainpower if you can't find something with evidence to give him shit about.
Ned Flanders
(233 posts)And based upon who's testimony do you believe he had bamboo shoved under his fingernails? Please enlighten me. I don't want to be ignorant, nor do I wish to mindlessly perpetuate myths of heroism which are not deserved.
I do think it is appropriate to question fake war heros, to expose them even. Is it fair game to question Bush Sr's "heroism," given he allegedly bailed out of a damaged bomber instead of trying to land it, thus condemning a crew member to death? So now we have McCain, threatening to invade Iran, threatening to send many more people to an early grave. Should we not question his own heroism?

(90,708 posts)John McCain was once upon a time an asset to the Senate, and deserved his medals or whatever it was he got for being a POW. He was maimed for life in the crash of his jet.
That was then.
He is now a cranky pain in the ass and a complete detriment to the governmental process.
This is now.
Distinguish between the two an you will gain more credibility here and elsewhere.
Some parts of his personal history are unsavory -- but he definitely was a POW, and calling a POW facility "the Hilton" is more an ironic statement than saying you got a mint on your fresh pillow each night.

(9,494 posts)I wouldn't come home and use it as an excuse to send others into the same situation. Heroes are people like John Kerry who face the horror and are brave enough to face the truth when it's over.
I am old enough to have friends who fought on the ground in that war and never glorify what they went through. To me John McCain was just a poor flyer who used his excellent connections to get into a plane and bomb a country full of peasants and he was proud of it. When he was shot down he failed to live up to the standards of his fellow POWS and made it home to call himself a hero for the rest of his life. Then proceeded to send as many young Americans into to every meat grinder of a war that he could help create.
I can't imagine anyone further from a hero. I'd pin a medal on any decent hard working American before I'd salute that old fart.

His time is short. He has passed only one piece of legislation in his entire time in office. He is nothing but a failure. From his personal life, his time on the Forrestall to his time in office to his failed bid for presidency.
Now all he can do is jump up and down and kick up dust as he slowly passes away. Can't wait for him to be gone. Why Graham sticks around with him is probably to pick up his supporters when McCane (sp intended) is gone.

(22,000 posts)as of lately. He'll be 80 in 2016. I know many senators serve into their 80s, but maybe he'll decide to get out before he loses a senate race (losing for president is bad enough, but getting kicked out of the job you've had for a long time would be really embarrassing). He will have been in Congress for 36 years and in the Senate for 34 years. Someone definitely needs to give him the hint his time is up.

(3,128 posts)I was a teacher in the 1970s in Virginia Beach, VA, in a high school that served Oceana Naval Air Base, then the largest air base in the world and the base that suffered the highest number of Viet Nam prisoners of war.
The students of returning Viet Nam POWs at the high school talked about their fathers' disgust for McCain, that McCain had sold them out to their captors. It was openly discussed that McCain should be court marshaled, but his father's position in the military saved him. He was a coward then as now.
Then there is his abandoning his sick wife to marry into a rich Arizona family.
Let us not forget was his huge role in the Keating savings and loan scandal (the Keating Five) while I was pursuing my PhD in Arizona in the 1980s. A major reason that McCain did not go to jail for his part--and his part was the largest of the five--was that the other four were Democratic senators in a Democratic-controlled Congress.
I know first hand that John McCain has no moral compass. Like George W Bush and Mitt Romney, he feels he is entitled.
John McCain is a myth. He has proved time and again that he is not a man!
