Looks Like GOP Will Embrace Immigration Reform As Long As There Is No Path To Citizenship.

The plans being laid for reform reminds me of the the play "Waiting For Godot". We are seeing theater of the absurd at its very best.
Albee, Becket and other absurdist dramatists could never match what is going on in Congress. The shenanigans of the GOP in particular makes the most absurd of the theater genre completely sane by comparison. For the icing on the cake a good dose of the play "The Bald Soprano" exposes the kind of logic and reasoning that goes on on the GOP side.

1. So the GOP gets legal residents (workers) who are expected to pay taxes, serve in the military,

and do everything else expected of citizens, but cannot vote for the government they live under. Now there's a recipe for a healthy, democratic (small 'd') society.

Of course, if the GOP thought these immigrants would vote republican, they would 'miraculously' see the wisdom and generosity of providing a path to citizenship. Since, in fact, immigrants vote overwhelmingly Democratic, the GOP sees "taxation without representation" as an acceptable permanent condition for these people.

If republicans were intellectually honest (now there's a novel concept) they would come right out and say that they are for continuing the present system. What better for their 1% than a system that provides millions of 'illegal' workers who are not covered by labor laws and are easy to exploit because they live in fear.

They could continue to pander to their base that 'self-deportation' (many in the base want 'forced' deportation but that is a different story) will work. (That goes against the evidence but we know that republicans rarely base policy on evidence.) And playing to the base's hope that 'self-deportation' will eventually 'work', they get to maintain the current employer-friendly system with millions of easily exploitable workers.

The 1% ain't stupid.
