Don’t Panic, But Thousands of Dolphins Were Spotted Swimming Away Off the Coast of San Diego

Amazing seven mile long super mega-pod of thousand dolphins spotted off the coast of San Diego

An ultra-rare "super mega-pod" of dolphins was spotted last week off the coast of San Diego by passengers aboard a whale watching tour boat.

According to the boat's captain, Joe Dutra, the pod was some 7 miles long by 5 miles wide, and consisted of some 100,000 common dolphins.

"They were coming from all directions, you could see them from as far as the eye can see," he told NBC 7. "I've seen a lot of stuff out here… but this is the biggest I've ever seen, ever."

Those dolphins are probably just caucusing to elect their three representatives to the Undersea Senate.

Wait until mid March when the whales have their caucus; then you'll really see something.

man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much—the wheel, New York, wars and so on—whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man—for precisely the same reasons."

But in the end it turns out it was always the mice.

one about 20 years ago off the SoCal coast. I took a boat trip out to Anacapa Island (one of the Channel Islands).

On the way out, the boat was surrounded by them as far as the eye could see. Some of them were clearly enjoying themselves racing the boat and darting in from of it.

When we got to the island and were walking around on top where you have such great views all around, you could see that same absolutely gigantic pod of dolphins circling the island clockwise, and it had to be hundreds of thousands of them. A truly remarkable sight.

I was on a cruise from Hawaii to San Diego courtesy of the Navy.

The dolphins were intrigued by the ship. They tracked with us for about an hour, playing in the wake. I couldn't tell how many there were, but it was at least in the hundreds.

Dolphins Evolve Opposable Thumbs

HONOLULU–In an announcement with grave implications for the primacy of the species of man, marine biologists at the Hawaii Oceanographic Institute reported Monday that dolphins, or family Delphinidae, have evolved opposable thumbs on their pectoral fins.

One of the evolved dolphins, whose opposable thumbs have struck fear in the hearts of humankind.

"I believe I speak for the entire human race when I say, 'Holy fuck,'" said Oceanographic Institute director Dr. James Aoki, noting that the dolphin has a cranial capacity 40 percent greater than that of humans. "That's it for us monkeys."

Aoki strongly urged humans, especially those living near the sea, to learn to communicate using a system of clicks and whistles in a frequency range of 4 to 150 kHz. He also encouraged humans to "start practicing their echolocation as soon as possible."
