A week ago Saturday, Lee Judge drew a political cartoon on gun control. The idea for the cartoon came to him from the news. The honored “American sniper,” Chris Kyle, one of the nation’s best wartime shooters, was tragically gunned down by a troubled veteran whom he was attempting to help. Judge viewed the fact that Kyle became a gun victim as a direct contradiction to NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre’s much-publicized statement: “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.”

Judge’s point: If a clear “good guy with a gun” can be killed by a gunman, can more good men with guns lessen violence?

Immediately after publication, local reaction was scant. But by Thursday, after more newspapers picked up the cartoon for publication, and after Glenn Beck misinterpreted the cartoon on his website, distorting the “good man” reference to a slur on the murdered hero, the emails and calls started raining down, largely from out-of-state readers.

There was no intention to disrespect Chris Kyle. As is the purpose of all good political cartoons, the message was to raise a hard issue that is worth discussion and thought.

Here’s what resulted: 2,000-plus emails and hundreds of calls. Many argued the cartoon was disrespectful, most in less-than-respectful terms. Hundreds followed Beck in misinterpreting the point of the piece. The majority were obscene, hateful, crude and sexist, laced with unprintable obscenities. They included slurs, threats of lynching and of surprise attacks, wishes for slow painful deaths by cancer, and not-so-veiled threats to family members.

2. The most frustrating part is both side are guilty, leaving a sane and practical solution impossible

I support numerous strong and viable solutions, as do many gun owners, I see people on here willing to discuss, I also see screaming idiots that are merely dancing poutrage puppets responding to the puppet masters on both sides.
I found the comics presentation distasteful and a cheap shot, and the statement disingenuous, but I also believe for art, or press to make change possible, sometimes a figurative slap is necessary. I support this artists expression, but not his statement.

3. Perhaps you could give an example of how the Left catapults the propaganda as the right does.

And what do you find to be a cheap shot in this particular cartoon. The cartoon was based upon what the head of the NRA said as a solution to gun violence. "The only way to stop a bad man with a gun is by a good man with a gun". This famous sniper was supposed to be the "best" good man with a gun that America has to offer and he wound up dead.....You find this to be a cheap shot..... I don;t get it. I find it quite telling about what the NRA has to say about guns...

To address your not so subtle highjacking of the purity high ground, The Left is not monolithic, hate to tell you this, but I am Anti corporation, am for complete equality for the GLBT citizens of this country, I am vehemently opposed to the power of the MIC, favor complete revamping of our immigration laws, a meaningful adressing of the income inequality that is destroying American families, removal of the electoral college and making presidential elections a true democratic process, an established and have actually spent years working with actual Leftist advocates and "cadres" as well as many other progressive and even Leftist causes.. and just happen to believe in fairly unrestricted access to firearms for all responsible Americans. I have stated I see the need to compromise, and would be willing to do so, but I personally favor very liberal and open laws on gun ownership.
