Facebook tax refund question.

When they say that Facebook received a $491 million dollar tax rebate, do they actually get a check from the government for that much money? Sometimes you hear that a big corporation gets a $xxx tax credit, is that different. How does this stuff work? Sounds like ridiculous corporate welfare in any event. I was just wondering exactly how it works?
