I had a chance yesterday to meet with WA State Speaker of the House Chop, Democratic Senate Leader Murray and Lt Gov Owen along with 9 other Senate House members.
They had mentioned that Washington is looking like the death penalty will be abolished this session.
They have finally concluded that the cost vs deterrent numbers just don't add up.
This will also help with the budget issues that are a challenge for the state.

(8,554 posts)I know that several years ago there were only two states left who still had the option of hanging, but that may have changed.

Last I heard Gov. Kitz has placed a moratorium on all executions, but that is only a stopgap measure.
Oregon has only executed 2 people in 35 years (both under Governor Kitzhaber during his 1st term)
Measure 36 (2004) which was a constitutional amendment stating marriage was between a man and a woman is the one that is really dogging us. How the hell that one passed I'll never understand.

(22,000 posts)with all the state elected officials being Ds and almost our entire Congressional delegation being Ds as well (except for Walden). I have to wonder if that passing was just a fluke. There seems to be no logic in it.
