Clive Davis says he's bisexual

In his new memoir out Tuesday, the 80-year-old music mogul, who is twice divorced, reveals that he had sex with a man in the 1970s. Davis writes in "The Soundtrack of My Life" that he hadn't been repressed or confused during his marriages and that sex with a man "provided welcome relief."

Davis is the chief creative officer of Sony Music Entertainment. He writes that he's been in a "strong monogamous relationship" with a man for the last seven years.

He also writes that he dated a man from 1990 to 2004, which he says was a "tough adjustment" for his son Mitchell. He says after "one trying year," he and his son worked things out. Davis is the father of three children.

In a new interview with ABC's Nightline, Davis says bisexuality is "maligned and misunderstood," adding, "I'm not lying. Bisexuality does exist. For over 50 years I never had sex with a male. It wasn't repressed. I had very good sexual relationships with women."

GBLT people are still marginalized. It is probably helpful - and hopeful - to others when a successful GBLT person steps forward publicly, and 'demystifies' what being GBLT is for (some) straight people.

It will be nice when being GBLT is no more newsworthy than being straight is.

Perhaps you care about who is gay, bisexual or whatever, but I don't, and I don't know anyone who does. We've come a long way since the Rock Hudson revelation.

Is every GBLT person a wealthy celebrity, or are some still kids getting the crap kicked out of them for being "fags" and "dykes"? Do we have marriage equality in all 50 states in the US? How long have GBLT people been allowed to fight and die openly in the US armed services?

We haven't come far enough.

6. All of them have been, even after they became famous

Rock Hudson was literally marginalized to death, and Elton John almost killed himself because of this. Jodie Foster has been a huge closet case because of this, and Ellen's career was ruined because of being marginalized. Her talent and some folks determined to NOT have her marginalized revived her career.

Well you'd have to talk to Tim Cook about what kind of difficulties he's had reaching the level he's at and how much easier it might had been if he'd been straight.

I don't know if you're just really young and therefore don't remember or if you're clueless as far as the others go. Ellen DeGeneres had a really good sticom that tanked after she came out. Rock Hudson didn't have an easy time being gay and was unable to be open, which must have been difficult for him. And Elton John has been open about how difficult he's had it.

This is the Beyonce defence. If there's one black woman who is successful, there must be no discrimination against black people and/or women. In this case, if any gay people at all have ever had any success, there must be no mariginalization. Right.

9. Maybe we need to explain who he is

because 'chief creative officer' of Sony, at age 80, sounds like an honorary title. It looks to me as though he was actually famous for being president of Columbia Records in the late 60s and early 70s, and then head of Arista.

10. To deny

that someone "in the spotlight" coming out isn't "news" or worth the title of "news" is to demean the history and the current status of the LGBT Community. The LGBT Community isn't made up of just those who are out and living out lives. They are also made up of those who aren't out, who are struggling with themselves, who know who they are but are still forced to lie and even face danger if they were to let it know who they wanted to love. Every person who comes out and lives a happy, successful life afterward is another piece of hope to this part of our community. Anyone who has had to live that kind of life understands just how important seeing this kind of hope is.
