Which is Likelier? Rise of fascism in a nation where

the nation is dysfunctional due to right-wingers or where the nation is dysfunctional because of left-wingers?

I suspect the answer is that they are equally likely. Instability is instability is instability.

Dysfunction leads to people losing faith in society which then leads to bad things. The Republican Party supports bad things. They are the bad thing Party. Much of their agenda can only advance in the context of crisis, cynicism and dysfunction.

It is not irrational for them to smash things. It is what they do. They are looters and looters thrive on disaster.

"We" (the nation) are always amazed that they do such unpopular things. They commit political suicide every week... which suggests that maybe it isn't really 'suicide.' They have been total dicks for decades and yet they control all Federal spending. All federal spending.

There is a weird power in not being afraid whether people hate you. Richard Nixon was not liked by anyone I've ever heard of, yet somehow was elected VP twice, elected President twice, and lost a very close race for President in 1960.
