Dreaded Auto-Play Video Ads Could Be Coming To Facebook, VP Confirms

TV commercials that automatically play could soon hit Facebook’s news feed.
This week Facebook VP of Business David Fischer admitted auto-play video ads might be distracting,
but said “I believe there are ways we could do it.”
Fischer said during his Stanford Future Of Media Conference keynote that he admired YouTube’s video ads.
But auto-play video spots could be flashy and annoying in the quiet news feed.

At Wednesday’s Future Of Media Keynote with Fischer, Fortune magazine’s senior editor at large Adam Lashinsky opened the conversation about video ads saying Wall Street is clamoring for them.
Fischer explained they already exist in one form. Businesses can post videos from their Page and then pay to show them to more people, though those have to be clicked to play. He noted that businesses constantly ask for more attention-grabbing video ad units closer to a home page takeover than a simple news feed story.

Do you have any idea how many time I've hit the 'back' button in my browser and turned to another source without ever going back because of autoplay video advertising? I do it every single time, without exception. I never, ever go back to the websites that do it. What's worse are the sites that do it and redirect back to them when you try to back out. Those get actively blocked with a swiftness that is almost gleefully malicious.

My Facebook account will get deleted if they do this. It's a dealbreaker.

Truly unlimited data is expensive, but worth the price for the amount of surfing I do on the thing.

Of course, I rarely have access to a 4G connection, so the 3G use is murder on my battery compared to the same use rate on, say, an iPhone. Android is a far superior system than iOS, for a great many reasons, but it's hell on the battery. That could also be because Android phones have a much larger screen than any iPhone, and support actual, true HD resolutions...

but I use Ad Block on my Firefox browser, so there are probably more ads out there than I ever thought there were.

is charging for membership to a site that already sells your information to advertisers. The next FB won't be far behind.

As long as it's nominally "free", you will have people that visit and use it.

I've been using FB since 2009 and I can't tell you how many times I've seen that happen.

It's crazy because the same people keep posting the same shit, without even checking Snopes.com or HoaxSlayer or one of those first.

The ads application programming interface, or API, would allow advertisers to connect their existing ad management software to their Twitter account to automate ads on the micro-messaging platform.

Twitter said that it would begin by integrating with ad software by Adobe Systems, Salesforce, Hootsuite, SHIFT and TBG Global.

"With the Ads API, marketers now have more tools in their arsenal to help them deliver the right message, to the right audience, on the desktop and on mobile devices — all at scale," Twitter product manager April Underwood wrote in a blog post.

Under pressure to show growing revenues, Twitter in recent years has ramped up its ad-serving capabilities while building a sales staff to woo corporate marketers. Assuming you are familiar with, for example, Firefox add-ons which is less universal than you may think. However it depends how they are set up. The annoying videos at, say, nfl.com that play a few seconds after opening the page will not start, but youtube doesn't work like that - they embed the ad in the video you want to play - making you sit through it to get to content. Other than a few foreign tv shows I'm not much of a youtube consumer personally, but that's the way to place video ads. Embed them not just before videos but before the Zynga games or photo albums or what ever other content FB thinks you want to open.
