Labor leaders hold rally at Statehouse

Speak now, politicians and labor leaders urged Saturday, and after that, don’t hold your peace.

A rally Saturday afternoon outside the Statehouse attracted about 200 people to hear speakers assail bills pushed by Republican Gov. Sam Brownback and the conservative Republican majority in the Legislature.

Jean Schodorf, a former state senator representing Wichita, said voters must make their voices heard now, because bills must be ready to go to the other chamber of the Legislature by Friday.

“The clock is ticking,” she said.

Schodorf, who was defeated in the 2012 primary that saw conservative Republicans oust moderates, said she became a Democrat in response to a shift she sees in the Republican Party.

“I’d been a lifelong Republican, but the Republican Party is not the party of (President Dwight D.) Eisenhower,” she said.
