NASCAR blocks YouTube video of Daytona crash out of ‘caution’ and ‘respect’

Source: Poynter Institute

... Social media users are boiling angry that at least one eyewitness video of the crash has been blocked on YouTube. YouTube says in its on-screen announcement that it was blocked because NASCAR claims a copyright violation.

Texas Christian University media law professor Chip Stewart said the copyright claim makes no sense:

You can't (c) news facts. Video by fan = fact. RT @AntDeRosa: NASCAR reason makes no sense, since they're airing other video of injured fans

... The video was restored late Saturday night. The Washington Post’s Erik Wemple provides a statement from YouTube that explains the reversal:

“Our partners and users do not have the right to take down videos from YouTube unless they contain content which is copyright infringing, which is why we have reinstated the videos.”

ESPN become the 'go to' site to view the crash. They televised the race and had the best resolution video, too.

They are saying two fans in critical condition and have been upgraded to stable condition. Some of the injuries are heat related and nothing to do with the crash. One of the videos was taken less than ten ft. from where the tire hit someone and shows the crowd reacting after the event happened but doesn't show the injured. That Youtube video is still up.

Guessing that will get a redesign.

Looked like more than just a tire too. Mad props to the guy in the middle of the stands that, I mean, no shit, instantly covered the person sitting next to him with his body.

the power and reach of social media. Videos and photos of the wreck are being posted all over the interwebs.
Might as well go and try to stop the tides.
