I just loved Argo and Lincoln. Didn't see the other major films, but I will at a later date.

(26,219 posts)Kinda shying away from the screen version because I remember it too well. I went to a showing in Florida in the 90s and it was awful.
Kinda like reading the book and finding out the movie sucked - but I never read the original Les Mis, so Broadway is my yardstick on it.

Though it wasn't as bad at ignoring history as that movie a few years ago that made it appear the U.S. not the British had captured the Enigma machine.

I saw Lincoln and Life of Pi.
The most gorgeous dress I've ever seen at the Oscars when Oprah was there. She may have been up for an Oscar that year. It was a Bob Mackie. Slinky black knit, a deep V neck and lots of silver and silver blue bugle beads on the neck and shoulders. Very flattering.

(20,818 posts)I don't care for Waltz, and I cannot stand Tarantino and his "work." I've never, ever, ever understood his appeal and I never will. It makes me sick that he won original screenplay also, while Lincoln hardly won anything and it actually deserved to win everything it was nominated for. I turned the tv off during his acceptance speech. Jones deserved it.
All in all, this was a very disappointing Oscar night and I've watched every year for over thirty years now.

(10,044 posts)PI got best director, and I assumed wrongly that best director was the same as best picture...go figure.
If that Chinese director directed PI, he no doubt deserved it. The other directors all worked with humans, not tigers.

(20,818 posts)I've watched every year for over thirty years, and this definitely ranks as one of the worst, what a disappointment.
I realize the Academy is run by old, stodgy white guys, but they have GOT to start changing some things and spicing up others, or they will lose the next generation, period. And they've been told this for years and have not done much about it. They still insist on stupid, clunky dance numbers and including a ton of boring awards, clustering them all together so that the only awards people really care about come at the very beginning and at the very end.
I was even disappointed in the In Memoriam section, something I never have a problem with. They left out a LOT of really good people this year, which is inexcusable.

(3,941 posts)over his head, the direction is very choppy and disjointed, the jokes flat and lackluster, boring show so far. I'm sitting here feeling embarassed for the presenters. The whole bit with how bad the reviewers are going to be tomorrow seems very phophetic. "I saw your boobs...?" how sophomoric. Just ain't feeling it, time to find something else to watch. I'll catch the Cliff Notes version later.

(70,707 posts)How often does THAT happen, a parent playing the role before -- something to be NOTED, at least?!1 A critic said she has not managed to deliver a graceful acceptance speech in all of the previous wins, and this was no exception, a list of names, albeit adoring of the spouse. But as I reconsider, to me this might mean she's a born-in-the-trunk, not a surface, type. But really, the mother?!1

Anne Hathaway's Mom: Actress Thanks Kate Hathaway
Anne Hathaway won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for playing Fantine in "Les Miserables" and in her acceptance speech she thanked her mom, Kate, for giving her an early example.
"I want to thank my mother, who I saw perform this role when I was eight," she said.
Kate McCauley Hathaway is an actress who played Fantine in the first U.S. traveling tour of "Les Miserables" and helped her daughter prepare for her big-screen role.
"We just talked about the character," Anne told the Hollywood Reporter. "She told me a lot about her experience playing Fantine, which gave me even more confidence that it was in my blood, in my DNA, it was a family legacy. I think it allowed me to connect on a deeper level to the character, knowing how much it meant to her."
The preparation paid off. Kate told the Los Angeles Times, "I know I'm her mother, but I think she's the perfect Fantine. I don't feel like I dove into Fantine as far as she did. Annie actually opened my eyes to the character because of all the research she did."

(8,694 posts)Jennifer Lawrence, meh she was ok, but really her part was not really difficult. Loved Silver Linings Playbook, but Quvenzhané Wallis was phenomenal in Beasts of the Southern Wild, she should have won. Glad Daniel Day Lewis won for Lincoln. Of course agree with Argo.
