Man Accidentally Shoots Self At Dayton Gun Show

TROTWOOD, Ohio - Police near Dayton said a 50-year-old man accidentally shot himself in the hand after attending a gun show there.

No one else was injured Saturday afternoon.

The accidental shooting happened outside Hara Arena in suburban Dayton where there was a gun and knife show.

Trotwood police told The Dayton Daily News that the man had just bought a holster and was putting a handgun in it when the gun fired.

I'll never forget it, it was "Gun Appreciation Day" in January of this year. I had posted accidental shootings at gun shows weren't as rare as one might think and I was told I was wrong. It almost never happens, it's extremely rare for a person to accidentally discharge a gun at a gun show. Then the news broke and was suddenly everywhere about the 5 people who were accidentally shot at gun shows that very day.

8. There is a reason gun shows don't allow loaded guns, the NRA doesn't allow guns in its buildings,

gun stores don't allow loaded guns, etc. They know just how unsafe gun owners are as a group.

I'll guarantee that every gun owner who makes one of these mistakes thought they were very safe right before they screwed up.

What can possibly go wrong in a situation where they're being brandied about like toys by people who think they're not about to mishandle them?

What amazes me is how many of these things are taken to guns shows loaded. I've read it's not permitted to have loaded guns at gun shows before your mention of it just now. What are these folks doing, loading them after they're admitted? I know some of the shootings take place at the checkpoint, but I've read of several over the years - like this one - where it's after they've made a purchase or while looking at a gun for sale. Is it just carelessness on the part of the person checking them in?

12. I don't know that anyone "enjoys" it, but there have been so many of these episodes.

The statistics are pretty clear - having a loaded gun around is injury and/or death waiting to happen. In some ways I feel very sorry for the 23 year old dad of the 4 year old in Texas who killed himself accidentally, just because I can empathise with his loss, but the fact remains that he fucked up by keeping a loaded gun where a child could get at it. He even said so repeatedly himself, but I think he used "messed up bad" instead of "fucked up". I'll stick by the term I used. He's still going to (and should) face charges, but what he did will haunt him for life, jail or not.

Disclaimer: I own guns. I keep them unloaded and all but the shotgun are in a safe. The shotgun and it's ammo are separated by distance. They're all inherited "heirlooms". I've never purchased one.

15. Group statistical risks aren't exactly "clear" ways to predict individual risk.

The risk created by a gun is probably similar in character to the risk created by any mechanical object that can inflict damage rapidly. Give it to a cautious and knowledgeable person, and their risk of being shot may increase slightly. Give the same gun to an incautious, clueless, or impulsive person, and their risk of getting shot probably increases dramatically. Same reason that giving Ferrari keys to a cautious adult will probably not increase that person's risk of getting into an accident, at least not by much, while giving those Ferrari keys to a teenage boy who just slugged down half a bottle of Jagermeister will probably result in an evening-news story on his massive car crash.

The guy in this case sounds like an idiot. Even if it was permissible for him to have a loaded gun, it's a fundamental principle of gun safety that you always check whether the gun is loaded before you pull the trigger or do anything which otherwise might fire the gun.

Well, one's an old BullDog revolver and it doesn't have a safety. While I don't even keep ammo for the handguns, the two clip-style pistols have their safeties set. Curiously, I don't even know where the clips for the things are - in a box somewhere.

And blech - Jagermeister - I took a taste of it once and almost lost my cookies. It's a disgusting fad. Bleah, blech, barf, ungh. Gross stuff, that.
