(63,912 posts)seemed delighted. One of them, a young woman to the left of Michelle looked so touched by Michelle's remarks she looked like she was going to tear up! But then, after Michelle announced the winner she burst into a big smile, along with the rest! Nice, nice moment...

Really, WTF?
What the hell was the military doing there? Do we have to have the Obamas and the military infiltrate every aspect of American life?
Let's all applaud the best picture! And the Obamas! And the military! In America. military and the presidency and fictional movies are one and the same!

(13,661 posts)It was totally bizarre.
Makes no sense.
Of course they're people. Why were they in uniform? What did any of it have to do with moviemaking?
Damn it, can't people watch anything these days that doesn't have some military worship overtones?

(24,135 posts)First lady presses governors on veterans jobs
WASHINGTON First lady Michelle Obama on Monday challenged governors to make it easier for military personnel to transfer their skills to civilian jobs as they return home from Afghanistan and other far-flung posts.
While this time of war may be ending, the truth is our responsibility to our troops and their families will really just be ramping up, Mrs. Obama told governors during an event at the White House.
Mrs. Obama pressed states to pass legislation or take executive action by 2015 allowing veterans to receive professional credentials or licenses based on their experiences in the military. Administration officials said that would allow veterans to apply for jobs more quickly rather than having to take courses for skills they already have.
The nations governors are in Washington for their annual meeting.
The veterans initiatives are part of Mrs. Obamas Joining Forces program, which aims to help veterans and their families. The program has focused in particular on assisting military personnel find civilian jobs, an effort that is expected to take on more urgency as the Afghan war comes to a close by the end of next year.
Mrs. Obama said 1 million military personnel will be transitioning back to civilian life over the next few years.
The first lady wants states to focus in particular on making it easier for veterans to obtain credentials and licenses for commercial driving, nursing, and emergency medical services, administration officials said. The White House has outlined suggested legislative language states can use for implementing the changes.http://www.armytimes.com/news/2013/02/ap-michelle-obama-to-press-governors-on-vets-jobs-022513/

(32,342 posts)I'm not getting the outrage over the First Lady doing the Oscars. Promotion of American culture is very much in line with traditional First Lady things. It seems fun, like something Eleanor Roosevelt would have liked to do.

(716 posts)I think it's fair to say that she's already the most outgoing and powerful first lady (first spouse) in our history, no offense intened to Eleanor Roosevelt or Jacqueline Kennedy intended. She just gets real with everyone and appeals to everyone who doesn't hate her out of bigotry. I hope she runs for president in 2016. She could easily win, and a Obama/Clinton first-ladies ticket would be profound!
