A 15-year-old rape victim has been sentenced to 100 lashes for engaging in premarital sex, court officials said.
The charges against the girl were brought against her last year after police investigated accusations that her stepfather had raped her and killed their baby. He is still to face trial.
Prosecutors said her conviction did not relate to the rape case.
Amnesty International condemned the punishment as "cruel, degrading and inhumane".
The government said it did not agree with the punishment and that it would look into changing the law.

(8,830 posts)or is it just that it was not reported in years past? I honestly do not recall seeing stories about abused female children and teens being punished because they were abused.
I need to do a Lexis/Nexus search or something . . .
Zaima Nasheed, a spokesperson for the juvenile court, said the girl was also ordered to remain under house arrest at a children's home for eight months.
She defended the punishment, saying the girl had willingly committed an act outside of the law.
Officials said she would receive the punishment when she turns 18, unless she requested it earlier.
The "girl had willingly" allowed herself to be raped and impregnated by her stepfather?
She "willingly" gave birth and then turned the infant over to him to be murdered and buried?
She can "request" her 100 lashes earlier??
How can ANYONE defend this? Are we supposed to consider this more humane because they'll wait until she's 18 before they beat her to the point of death - or to death?

(407 posts)Than the way I was brought up right here in the USA. I was raised Roman Catholic, and went to a Catholic Parochial School until 7th grade, and then attended weekly religion classes right through high school.
What I was told is that rape is always the woman's fault, and that if one of us was attacked by a rapist, we had an obligation to make him kill us instead. Or to put it another way, the appropriate penalty for 'tempting' a man is death. No wimpy 100 lashes for Catholic girls!

The other nuns warned us about being in dark and lonely places around the hospital because it could happen to any of us. I don't remember any blame on us for it or that nun. I can't imagine her baggy black penguin clothes made her look slutty or the ugly utilitarian uniforms we wore would make us look slutty.
Years before at school one of our lay teachers had been raped. Again we were warned to be careful. I never remember being told she probably was raped because of the way she dressed. It was again a warning against being in dark and lonely places on campus because even though they tried to have as much security as they could you never knew who was lurking.
The only time we got the tempting a man advice was when the nuns gave us dating advice. I guess they were aware that we were more likely to be date raped than any other kind. So I can't really blame Catholic school about that. Now the priests were a whole different matter when they lectured us in Church about how ladies don't tempt men.
Oh, I did get a lecture in the hospital once about tempting a seminarian away from his vocation by a nun who caught me sitting on his lap sharing a milkshake in the break room. He hadn't taken any orders yet!

I remember my mother saying she didn't believe the girl because the guy was very attractive and the girl wasn't she didn't believe he would do that to an ugly girl. She was disfellowshipped Because she would not repent her sinful ways, nothing happened to him.
