As you all know, Mississippi is squeezing out the last reproductive health clinic in the state by requiring doctors to have admitting privileges at hospitals where they do not. But Mississippi (as do other anti-rights states) has a sizeable Choctaw reservation that is not subject to state law. Has anyone ever explored the idea of putting clinics and the surrounding services on reservation land? I don't know what the ins and outs would be re emergencies, but clearly that was not something people felt was an impossible situation before.
I can imagine problems (as well as a certain grim humor) but it's a thought.
Those who know more than I, weigh in.

(41,984 posts)I grew up on the Gulf Coast of MS and many of the casinos there are owned by the tribes. The history of that is funny. First you could gamble outside the 12 mile limit so people had boats that went out. Then there was "dockside" and then the definition of "boat" began to include 12 story casino hotels that did indeed float ties to docks. The Katrina hit, and some of those boats became boats and set down on buildings a considerable distance inland. Now they just rebuilt them on pilings. But the locals still call it "going to the boats".
Now back to my serious question...

There might be a possibility, however. If free health clinics for Choctaws were partially funded by abortion services to all, then they might decide they could take care of trouble-makers. Could be a win-win.

(9,808 posts)I can imagine them being suspicious because Native Americans have endured a long and nasty history of eugenics and genocide, including forced and concealed sterilization, but they may be willing to consider it, if only to stick it to the state. Iirc, relations between the state and the council are not great.

(41,984 posts)I wouldn't know what to say. "Have you ever thought..." I don't know what the people would think. It might be buying trouble, but it would depend on whether they had support and some really good PR.
