Carrie Fisher briefly hospitalized after bipolar episode during bizarre performance on cruise ship

Carrie Fisher briefly hospitalized after bipolar episode during bizarre performance on cruise ship

Carrie Fisher checked into the hospital for treatment of her bipolar disorder after a wacky performance on a cruise ship.

The actress, 56, appeared on stage last week as a surprise celebrity guest on the Holland America Eurodam and gave a bizarre performance, which one cruise member captured on video.

The "Star Wars" actress slurred through snippets of songs, and even leaned down midway during her performance to clean up after her dog after it defecated and urinated on stage.

Guests who witnessed Fisher's show speculate that the "Wishful Drinking" author was drunk at the time, but a representative told the Daily News that her behavior was related to mental illness.

. . . .

Fisher has publicly discussed her problems with drugs, her struggle with bipolar disorder, and her overcoming an addiction to prescription medication, most notably on ABC's 20/20 and The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive with Stephen Fry for the BBC. She discussed her 2008 memoir Wishful Drinking and various topics in it with Matt Lauer on NBC's Today on December 10, 2008 and also revealed that she wished she had turned down the role of Leia Organa.[30] This interview was followed by a similar appearance on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson on December 12, 2008, where she discussed her electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) treatments.[31] She has said that she receives ECT every six weeks to "blow apart the cement" in her brain.[3

I wish for her sake that it hadn't been taped. It must be hard enough trying to cope with mental illness, without having a bad episode happen in public and get recorded.

I hope she gets stabilized in the hospital and gets the bipolar under control. One of my closest friends is bipolar.

I grew up with a mentally ill brother during a time that was far less open to admitting mental illness is an illness and not just people "acting" or "trying to work the system" or that "those people" are just mean or "crazy." We're not much better about attitudes on mental health now. People still hide the fact they go to a therapist or might be on anti-depressants because there is still such stigma attached.

So I wish Ms. Fisher well. It sounds like she was rational enough to make the decision to go to a hospital and get help. Trust me, that's huge for a person who has a disorder. To this day my brother still won't admit he has issues.

I am friends with her step-mother.

A couple of years ago, Carrie and her step-mother came to our house. Carrie was pushing a stroller with a life-like baby doll and she was talking to it as if it was a real child.

It was really quite sad.

Somewhere, along the line, she has lost all touch with reality.

We walked around the plaza of our little town and she stayed within the same character. It was one of the most surreal days of my life.

My heart goes out to her.

Which is something I suffer from. I heard rumors today about her and Hamill being looked at to be in the new star wars film.

I hope she gets better from whatever problems she is facing.

I do not see Carrie as being any kind of employable.

That cruise line was just trying to sell tickets and they were using her name.

After I saw your post, I called her step-mother and she told me that poor Carrie is off the hook.

Bi-polar has nothing to do with it, she is too far gone.

Piss on the people who were trying to capitalize on her name.

Take care, SS.

I guess that's the price of fame, both past and present. Your privacy tends to go away. Still, unfortunate that it's around for all to see.

A lot worse than Carrie Fisher's performance there.

My grandma was well past "wacky" and deep into the scary sometimes. Without her pension and her house she would have been a bag lady, the sort who gets in your face with crazy-talk.

Eventually she had to be removed from her house because she was a danger to herself and others. After that she lived in assisted care places or with my parents. The assisted care places didn't like her because she refused to bathe, hoarded food in her room, took things out of the trash... etc.

I think I inherited a quarter of her crazy, but modern meds do work for me.

Mental illness is rough.
