Opponents of Secretary of Defense nominee Chuck Hagel are fuming in the aftermath of sloppy work by their allies that has backfired and risks turning their cause into a joke.
The bumble: A thinly sourced claim that Hagel had taken money from a heretofore unheard of group called "Friends of Hamas," floated by the conservative website Breitbart.com, and sourced to Capitol Hill.
The shadowy group "Friends of Hamas," which Hagel was accused of receiving donations from, appears to have originated as a joke from a reporter to his source that the source then spread to others as a fact, according to an account by the reporter, Dan Friedman of the New York Daily News, on Wednesday.
Friedman's joke became went viral when it appeared in a Breitbart News article as information coming from Senate sources. Opponents of Hagel, including former Gov. Mike Huckabee, started picking up on it and publicly citing it to demand that Hagel release more financial records.

(18,479 posts)""This sort of thing drives me crazy because it undermines legitimate concerns about Sen. Hagel, his views and financial associations," said a Senate Republican aide involved with the anti-Hagel efforts. "In this business we deal in facts or the pursuit of facts and making up groups like the Friends of Hamas distracts us from legitimate questions as to what private foreign foundations and wealthy foreign individuals are contributing to the Atlantic Council or investing in Sen. Hagel's firms." "
That is so precious......

(53,661 posts)I always though of it as a rightwing song, but the GOP doesn't stand for doing anything right. They are bought and paid for Koch puppets. They're only about the money.

(35,077 posts)It was clearly the Friends of Hamas trying to create a fabrication that global warming exists so they could turn the US into a Sharia-Marxist state with mandatory gay marriage.

(23,973 posts)The real story is about a secretive Islamic group that loves them some delicious cured, smoked pork products.
What really happened was that one of their members, a guy named Binyamin Ghazi was seen eating a nice thick slice of ham as breakfast.
So that is why Hagel is getting all the crap from Republicans.

(31,706 posts)...Hagel's opponents were so anxious to find something/anything to nail him with they glammed onto something they thought COULD be legit...shot first and let the pieces fall where they may. This tactic has worked many times in the past...we're still dealing with the "New" Panthers Party bullshit every election...as the right wing bubble usually protects the sources and allows the rumors to circulate and percolate.
For many years the wingnut poutrage was kept on hate radio and blogs...bantered about privately but you'd never hear that drivel entered into a Congressional record or used as an official party talking point. In the past the rushpublicans could count on a compliant beltway stenography pool to gloss over their bullshit and allow their silly talking points to play, but now that game has worn thin and bullshit is being called.
As the rushpublican party drift further off the political abyss look for more of this type of rumor and "I've heard" bullshit to continue. The "popularity" of Randy Paulbot and Shakedown Cruz will only encourage more of these antics. The adults in the rushpublican party have become irrelevant...
