Anti GM-Salmon Petition Nears One Million
Almost one million people have signed an online petition to stop the US approving a scheme that would allow genetically modified salmon to enter the food chain.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is in favour of allowing a fish produced by scientists at AquaBounty to reach the dinner table.
The GM AquAdvantage fish has been modified through a growth gene which means it grows year-round instead of during spring and summer.
That allows it to reach market size within 18 months, rather than the three years required by a "natural" fish.
The scientists argue that their fish will not be a threat to natural ecosystems because all the GM fish are female and sterile.
