SNL really let Scalia have it last night

Video at link, below...

During the Weekend Update segment of SNL tonight, Seth Meyers and host Kevin Hart mocked the Supreme Court for even considering the Voting Rights Act is outdated. Meyers found this just slightly hypocritical, saying “I don’t think you get to say what’s outdated when you’re a small council of old people in robes who decide our laws and can’t be fired.”

On the argument that the Voting Rights Act unfairly punishes the South, Meyers admitted that the North has “some of America’s best racists,” but compared the South to the Michael Jordan of racism. Hart told the justices that they can’t just do stuff like this because they have their one black friend: Clarence Thomas.

<...>

Meyers singled out Mississippi for being the one state that only just now got around to outlawing slavery, quipping that not only did it take them 150 years after Lincoln, but “they waited six months after Lincoln the movie.”

I got home too late to catch it and I don't have a DVR. Fortunately, we have the Internet.

A democracy can't function without it. We should treat it that way. The shit that is going on in Michigan, with whole city governments --of predominantly black communities--being rendered powerless and taken over by an unelected "emergency manager" is horrific. How this passes constitutional muster is beyond me. Even in blue states, like CA, racist electoral practices happen in our very red inland counties, that could use the Section 5 remedies.

(And that includes "the right to keep and bear arms", regardless of what the bullet-heads say.)

The wise use of our vote is the only thing that can keep us a democracy. Keep your right to vote healthy--EXERCISE IT!!

I thought about that being a lot of work to oversee all 50 states.

BUT

If there is a chance to correct a wrong before it gets in the works
then the effort is well worth the outcome.

Time for me to write another letter to my congresspeople and the AG

and it doesn't discriminate against any particular state....

To paraphrase, they said the South saying things are improved so we don't need Section 5 is like a drunk being pulled over and saying he should be let go because he was WAY more drunk last time he was pulled over.
