Assault rifle owners will tell you one reason they want it is if someone breaks in in the middle of the night.
Anyone who's been to basic training will tell you the only way an assault rifle is going to help you in an invasion is if you've got it in bed with you with a full magazine locked, because burglars won't give you time to go to the closet for it.
The really scary part of this is, there are people paranoid enough they'd do this.

(95,247 posts)If menace is possible any time, any where, and if menace can manifest suddenly, then the weapon must be to immediate hand at all times, and one must be ready to employ it on split-second notice.

(464 posts)...first and only line of defense. A gun should always be used as a last line of defense in the home. a light on, doors locked, alarms on all the windows and if you can do it a good dog is a great first line of defense. Any of these could reasonably get you the few extra seconds it would take to call 911 and retrieve said weapon, and make sure it is condition 1.
***I only own one firearm, and it is a single shot .22 target pistol that belonged to my father. It is not anything I would use as a self defense weapon. Everything else I mentioned, I do have. and a sword if all else fails.

(31,493 posts)I've got a felon next store. His last arrest was felony gun theft. I am sure that wouldn't bother most anti gun people.
NOTE: I did not say I have a gun! I have ADT.

(50,559 posts)I see the crime reports for five Idaho newspapers; they are full of violent felonies. Not murders, but lots of armed robberies, break-ins and domestic violence.
On a per capita basis we have more violent crime than Manhattan. Manhattan has more crime but it has many times more people than this whole state. And it has no cops to speak of, and the ones it does have would rather arrest for "possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to use" (owning zigzag papers when you don't have cigarette breath.)
