a violent response from the sort of trumptrash who stormed the Capitol if they had voted to convict?
Republicans are opportunists, but what did they really have to gain from protecting Trump? How would they profit, other than keeping their jobs for the balance of this term?
I think they are truly afraid of the trumptrash.

(833 posts)is one year. He could be out by 2024. Moreover, there are numerous cases of incarcerated candidates winning. For this reason, I put more hope in the SDNY and NY AG's cases that seek to bust him on fraud, money-laundering, etc. That could jam him up for a long time. There are various kinds of fraud, carrying penalties of from two to ten years. And fraud is only one crime he's liable to be tried for in NY. So, to massage your phrase a bit, it would be hard to do the duties of president from prison. Not that he did them when he was free.

(14,047 posts)the Senate would bar him pursuant to the 14th amendment. All it takes is a simple majority and it would pass.

We are shielded from the threats gov public servants endure, mostly democrats of course. But voting to convict is almost like telling the crazies Im a democrat traitor now.

(14,494 posts)after all the impeachment dust settles to moderate those people and gather them back under the old party wing. Look for a media blitz starting around this spring with a lot of patriotic bullshit, flag-waving and Reagan-ish anti-government/anti-tax crap along with "only we can fix the deficit." Then, they will throw tRump under the bus.
If they're smart at all, they should try to put a damper on all the fury, resentment and Q-bullshit tRump allowed to fester for so long.
I really doubt if their true core (millionaire class) thinks tRump could win again in 2024 and they likely don't want to risk dealing with his insane behavior again. The Party truly is seriously fractured right now, but the billionaires always come through.
But, I've learned to never assume anything reasonable about Republicans. They never fail to fit the true profile of a trainload of psychopaths and as such, are unpredictable.
But you're right - they really are afraid of being shot by some wild-card MAGAt.
KY rant done.....

(11,771 posts)They fear their own violent constituents, but they also Love the thought of being part of that violent base. The majority are bullies and get off on the violent rhetoric and actions. Many, if not most in the House, are cut from the same cloth (sociopaths?). All were frightened for a short period of time, but only for themselves, not for their Democratic colleagues or even VP Pence. Some of them were So proud to come to the podium and still object to certification, then joyfully continue to promote trump's Big Lie. I'm not sure how many of these sorry excuses for humans will lose money or votes, but I think it will be very few. It's clear, violent takeover of our Democracy is the path the current republican party has decided isn't a bridge too far.
