Various Italian news sources reported Sunday that a mild earthquake had struck Rome and surrounding areas, including Castel Gandolfo, the former pope's temporary home.
According to the Agence France-Presse, the earthquake had a local magnitude of 2.5 and was felt in Rome, Ciapino, Marino and Castel Gandolfo. So far, no reports of injury or serious damage have been relayed to the Italian Department of Civil Protection.
Italian news blog Blogo reported that, according to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, the quake originated at a depth of 10.5 kilometers.
Then, as now, some people speculated as to whether the act of nature was really a divine message. On Sunday, Italia Domani asked whether the earthquake wasn't a sign for the cardinals who will soon be choosing a new pope.

(40,416 posts)I will not try to change your mind if you think differently. Just thought you might consider facts before jumping to conclusions. It's an Okham's razor thing.
Regardless, it's fun to consider that it might be the work of a higher order. Myself, I would bet on a civilization fairly high on the Kardashev Scale.
On second thought, maybe it was just a normal quake in a geologically active region.
It's still fun, though.

Or maybe I won't. He doesn't need me to sound crazy. But it is tempting...

(86,799 posts)Mt Vesuvius has been blowing its top for weeks, lightning strikes the Vatican and now an earthquake (though very small) rattling Ratzinger's new digs... seems like maybe the whole place is trying to tell him he needs to go further than just stepping down out of those ruby slippers... or maybe it IS the door whacking him on the ass as he departs.
