Dairy Industry Wants to Spike Milk with Aspartame (And Not Tell You)

Back in 2009, the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) and the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) filed a petition requesting that the FDA “amend the standard of identity for milk.” The petition asked the FDA to allow the use of “any safe and suitable” sweetener for milk. It also requested that the FDA amend the “standards of identity” for 17 other milk and cream products — sweetened condensed milk, whipping cream, yogurt and eggnog. All of these should be allowed to have “safe and suitable” sweeteners, according to the dairy groups.

In their petition, the IDFA and the NMPF contend that not letting consumers know about all the ingredients in milk will lead to “honesty and fair dealing in the marketplace.”

Not only does it (Soy Milk) taste better, you don't get that phlem like feeling from it. I had some low fat milk and was surprised at how bad it was.

the ingredient list; it just means it would still be called "milk" or "diet milk" or "flavored milk" instead of "diet flavored dairy-based beverage."

along with the warning "PHENYLKETONURICS: Contains phenylalanine", just like any other product containing aspartame.

Otherwise, people who have phenylketonuria (PKU) would be at risk of neurologic damage and death.

one such as aspartame, which is dangerous to phenylketonurics.

Your headline is a blatant lie. Nobody is trying to keep it off the ingredients list.

And I don't have a dog in this fight since I avoid it - the stuff gives me heart palpitations.

IDFA and NMPF argue that nutrient content claims such as “reduced calorie” are not attractive to children, and maintain that consumers can more easily identify the overall nutritional value of milk products that are flavored with non-nutritive sweeteners if the labels do not include such claims. Further, the petitioners assert that consumers do not recognize milk—including flavored milk—as necessarily containing sugar. Accordingly, the petitioners state that milk flavored with non-nutritive sweeteners should be labeled as milk without further claims so that consumers can “more easily identify its overall nutritional value.”

sure, aspartame might be listed on the ingredients label, but who reads the ingredients label on a carton of milk? Nobody I know.
