In an ironic turn of events, a mother was arrested after she was shot in the head by her son.
36-year-old Stacy Duggan, of Lenoir City, Tennessee, was rushed to University of Tennessee Medical Center, where she was treated for serious injuries caused by the gunshot wounds.
Duggan was listed in critical condition, after her 11-year-old son accidentally shot her in the head with a loaded gun he found in the house.
When the mother recovered she was arrested and charged with child neglect.
Her husband, Dan Duggan, was also arrested and charged with neglect for carrying a loaded gun within the reach of a child.

(29,047 posts)why she was arrested. Children should not have access to firearms unless a responsible adult is right there with the child.

(19,841 posts)--if a child gets access to a gun (even if they don't critically injure someone).
It may seem harsh, but this is the only way to stop this stuff.
And this certainly is neglect.

(19,841 posts)it is a crime that anybody should be shot in the head by a child.
If the parents go to jail anytime a child is found to have access to guns (even if there is no injury to others) then it would go a long way to stopping this.
I don't care if it was a mother or a neighbor getting hurt or killed, the parents are responsible. In this case we don't know that maybe one or the other parent was more guilty of neglect than the other. But if you don't have deterrents that are enforced, people will be stupid enough to get shot by their own kid.

(14,524 posts)There are however, some (few and weak) laws about responsible gun ownership and parenting, even if the Delicate Flowers don't like them.
It's nice to see one of them enforced, as it happens so rarely.

(8,339 posts)I'm fucking sick of that phrase. Anyone who thinks they need a gun in this day and age who doesn't hunt for food is about as fucking sensible as a snail trying to hump a rhinoceros.

(61,698 posts)Exceptions to that rule besides hunters? Because I know of plenty of folks living in the country where rattlesnakes and other wild animals have to be killed with a gun, not a hoe. Rattlesnakes will park themselves right on your front porch.

(10,362 posts)Awful that such a thing would happen, but you take a risk when you leave loaded guns lying around for children. Thankfully no one died.

(15,574 posts)That simple measure, applied to any, and I mean any infraction of the slightest, and you will see almost 100% compliance from these fools. They love their guns more than their kids, their own lives or their freedom. Take that away for having a gun lying around, loaded or not, and guns will never be left lying around. Take all their guns away and never let them have another as long as they live.
Problem. Solved.

(10,597 posts)...in these cases of children getting their hands on parent's loaded fucking guns laying around the house. If the child kills himself, then the parent is charged with murder. If a child shoots and kills his parents, siblings, friends or teachers, the parent is charged with murder and the child is put up for adoption. IMHO.
