LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Third district Congressman John Yarmuth will once again donate his congressional salary to local charities.
25 Louisville area non-profits will share this year's donation. Including The Home of the Innocents, The United Way, Youth Build, and Volunteers of America.
This is the fifth year in a row that Yarmuth has made the donation.
Congressman Yarmuth first made the pledge to donate his yearly salary when he ran for the seat in 2006. Since his first election he has donated more than $600,000 to local charities.

(12,530 posts)I'm in Lynne Woolsey's district now. I guess I've been lucky on the congressional front.
Nice gesture, Mr. Yarmuth.

(37,161 posts)I always feel conflicted by actions like this.
It's good that he's donating, but it just underscores that he (and many others in Congress) are in a position where they can donate their whole salary.
I'm glad the money that this Congressman (apparently) does not need is going to charity. However, I for one don't want to see a Congress that only wealthy people can afford to work in. The fact that many are already independently wealthy is bad enough. But not *all* of them are.
I know for a fact that my Dem. Congressman cannot afford to do this, and would not want to lose him to someone who can. If this action were to become common, it'd be a close equivalent to 'buying' the seat. Not a good precedent imho.
