House to skip town ahead of storm
By Russell Berman - 03/05/13 05:23 PM ET

The House is skipping town early because of a snowstorm headed for the nation's capital.

Republican leaders sent a notice to members late Tuesday afternoon announcing that the House would hold votes on Wednesday morning and then depart for the week. The change means that lawmakers will vote a day earlier than expected on a stopgap spending bill keeping the federal government open through the end of September. The House had been scheduled to meet on Thursday before leaving for the weekend.

The National Weather Service is predicting a winter storm on Wednesday will dump several inches of snow on Washington and the mid-Atlantic region. The new schedule calls for final votes before 1 p.m. The storm could still wreak havoc for Congress, since the votes are now scheduled to occur at the peak of the predicted snowfall.

Unlike major Northeastern cities, Washington is notorious for virtually shutting down in the face of even moderate snowfall.

them to really knuckle down to make sure they get something done before they have to leave, right?

Oh, wait. It's Boehner's House. Nevermind.

It is time for American citizens to demand "performance" from our legislators - or start to dock salaries for their failure to do so. Yes, I am aware of te Constitutional ramifications, but we could put policy in place for the next Congress. Since most incumbents are re-elected, they will be affected eventually. NOBODY should be paid their salaries for such part-time work!

We're expecting heavy, wet snow, the kind that brings down power lines and trees. The snow's going to start around midnight tonight and not end until 3 a.m. Thursday.

PEPCO, our notoriously lousy electric utility, sent out an automated phone message to customers saying it's already brought in 500 out-of-state repair crews to help with downed lines.

Here in Montgomery County, they're saying 6 to 10 inches total.

When that tornado-like weather event came through last summer, we lost power for 7 days. Apparently our power had been restored 3 days prior but no one "flipped the switch" and it took an additional 4 days for that to happen.

In terms of electric service, this area is like a third-world country.

it's been coming down at a pretty good clip ever since. Probably got 7 inches total so far. I put in my 8 hrs all while it was piling up outside. Drove 25 miles home, stopped by the credit union and looked at a side job on the way. I didn't have the option to bug out of town with the threat of a little snow in the forecast. I have to work for a living. If I don't work, I don't eat. These politicians are the most disconnected, pampered, overpaid bunch of babies I have ever seen. Since the Rethugs control the agenda in the house, I blame them. Get back to work you lazy fuckers!

On edit.

Now i have to go blow the driveway so my wife can get the car in the garage after she has put in her time at work. We are middle class Americans it's what we do.
We do whatever it takes to get it done. Why can't congress?

My friend's daughter works for Canadian passport office. She was told lateness is not accepted, a sick day or vacation day would have to be used or no pay for that day. She was also told she had to be aware of storms coming and to be ahead of the storm or stay in the town where the office is or use a vacation or sick day.

but I guess even for Canadian politicians in Parliament they have exceptions like the Amercian House.

She is a waitress at the mall in Gaithersburg. She's supposed to work a double shift today. The snow isn't expected to stop until around 3 a.m.. I don't know how she's going manage to drive home this evening.

I doubt the restaurant will get any customers today, so she probably will be just standing around doing nothing for $2.13 an hour, and risking her life getting there and back.
