This reads like a novel. He was a very senior politician (a cabinet minister) who came very close to becoming the leader of the Liberal Democrats. His wife, Vicky Pryce, was a prominent economist, appearing regularly on TV. The ultimate power couple. But in 2003 a roadside camera caught him doing 19 mph over the speed limit. He could have paid a small fine and accepted a 6 month license suspension. But instead, they agreed to lie and pretend that the wife had been driving. And they would have gotten away with it EXCEPT that a few years later, she was angry at him for having an affair, so she told the newspapers about the speeding lie. So he was prosecuted, but so was she, as part of the conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.
The upshot was, both were prosecuted, both had to resign in disgrace, both were convicted, and today were each sentenced to 8 months imprisonment.
Reminds me of the book "A Simple Plan", how one seemingly little lie can explode into disastrous consequences.
