Chrysler fires protest organizer at Warren plant

Chrysler Group LLC has fired a Warren Stamping worker who helped organize a demonstration at the plant two weeks ago to protest a controversial new work schedule.

Alex Wassell, a 63-year-old welder repairman with nearly 20 years at the automaker, had been suspended without pay for making comments — quoted in The Detroit News — that Chrysler said violated the company's code of conduct.

Wassell said he has filed a grievance over his dismissal, but would not comment other than to say, "I'm still looking for an amicable settlement of the grievance between the union and the company."

.......

"It's simply wrong for Chrysler to take this type of retribution for a peaceful protest," said Jana Mathieu, director of the National Lawyers Guild's Michigan chapter. "We stand behind Alex Wassell, who was attempting to have a say in changes that are going to affect the quality of life for all employees."
