.... She became a feminist icon upon her appointment to the Supreme Court in 1981—but does that make her a feminist? “It makes me an old lady,” she replied, and laughed. ....

“Living as I do in a city today, I have no occasion to use a gun—none. So, I don’t keep one.” ....

She decorously resists second-guessing the judgments of today’s Supreme Court. But when I asked if she thought it necessary for the general public to own assault weapons, she responded unequivocally: “I do not see the need for a resident of the United States to have an assault weapon.” ....

“Chief Justice!” she exclaimed. “Thought I saw you from in there,” he said, and the respect and affection of Chief Justice Roberts toward her were palpable. ....
